Authorities say vandalism at a Maine golf course will be investigated as a possible hate crime because of a swastika that was found carved into the green on the course's first hole.
Police suspect the damage at Cobbossee Colony Golf Course in Monmouth was done by teenagers sometime late Sunday or early Monday. They say they have at least one suspect, but have been unable to definitively link them to the crime.
The Kennebec Journal reports the attorney general will look at the case as a potential hate crime. Course owner Bill Sylvester says he is not Jewish. He doesn't know why someone would draw the symbol on the green.
Police estimate the cost of the damage between $2,000 and $3,000, not counting lost income as the course is repaired.

Kiwi friendから久しぶりにtextが送られてきました。内容は”Are you good at shogi?”とのことでした。正直、私は日本人であるにも関わらず将棋に関して全く知識がなかったので”I’ve never played shogi.”と返したら”Do you know how to play it?”と言われ、これは教えてあげるしかないと思いインタネットで一から調べました。まず駒の動かし方を理解しようと試みたとき、「角」という駒は斜めに動かすことができることを知りました。その時、斜めという英語がでてこなかったので調べました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』によるとdiagonal/dὰɪˈægənl/
は「対角線の(cf. horizontal, vertical)」の形容詞の意味と、「斜めの、あや（織）の」の名詞の意味が記載されていました。LDOCEには”a diagonal line is straight and joins two opposite corners of a flat shape, usually a square”と定義されていました。将棋盤がとても良い例であると思いました。また語源をインターネットで調べると、dia-「横切って」gon「角」、そして角から角へ横切るものは「対角線」とありました。
将棋はまずその駒ごとに動かすことのできるマスが異なるので覚えるのがとても大変だと思いました。しかし、そのKiwi friendは1年半後に日本に来る予定なのでその時一緒に楽しめるように私ももっと詳しくなりたいと思いました。

「野球、ソフトボール」の国際連盟の新理事に山田博子氏が選出されました。女性がこの協会の理事に選ばれることは初めてだそうです。

woman to the executive board of its division.
Hiroko Yamada was elected during a meeting of World Baseball Softball Confederation in Botswana on Saturday. The confederation says she is the first woman to join its baseball board.
In June, Yamada became the first female director of Baseball Federation of Japan. The Japanese organization governs the country's amateur baseball and serves as a liaison with the global body.
It's hoped that Yamada will promote women's baseball and use her experience to contribute to the management of baseball and softball events during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
