New Japan, Old Japan / Elements of Hokutosei sleeper train revived as Tokyo hostel
In 1988, the Hokutosei sleeper express was the first train to use the Seikan tunnel to link Ueno Station in Tokyo to Sapporo, over a journey of 1,200 kilometers. It gained popularity through such charms as luxury sleeping cars and a dining car where travelers could enjoy French-style cuisine. However, to the regret of many fans, in August 2015 the train service was completely discontinued due to the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen line and the aging of the Hokutosei train cars.
Last month, the Hokutosei was “revived” as a hostel in the Nihonbashi Bakurocho area of central Tokyo. Called Train Hostel Hokutosei, the hostel reuses train car equipment and has become a hot topic among railway enthusiasts who consider it a rebirth of their beloved sleeper express.
The hostel differs from ordinary accommodations, with large dormitory-type guest rooms shared by men and women on three floors and a large guest room exclusively for women on one floor. Its 38 bunk beds and two semiprivate rooms can accommodate up to 78 overnight guests. Restrooms, shower rooms and a kitchen are shared.

今回気になったのはmelee /méɪleɪ/です。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では「乱闘、騒々しいけんか」、「混乱状態」とありました。
Oxford Living Dictionariesによると、フランス語が語源の“variant of meslee melee”という意味で「メドレー、寄せ集め」の“medley”と関連しているそうです。

中国湖北省で土砂崩れが起き、付近のホテルに土砂が流れ込み、12人が死亡したとされています。

Authorities in China say 12 people are likely dead inside a hotel overrun by a landslide.
State media reported that rescuers have not detected signs of life from 10 people who were trapped underneath rocks and debris after the Friday night landslide in Hunan province.
The official Xinhua News Agency said 3,000 cubic meters (105,000 cubic feet) of debris tumbled down a slope behind the three-story hotel in Nanzhang county. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
A statement from the Nanzhang government said the rescue work had been hampered by a 150-ton rock that had fallen on the site. State media reported that rescuers were trying to pull rocks and debris off of the site before digging further.
Rescuers have pulled five survivors from the debris, two of whom died in a hospital.
Hilly and densely populated Hunan is frequently struck by landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

取り上げる単語は"overrun"です。先般、千歳空港でターボプロップによるoverrunがありましたが、ここは違う意味で用いられています。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)で調べてみると、「(…で)覆われる、(…が)はびこる、群がる」や「(期限、範囲、費用など)を越える」、「…を占領する、…を占拠する」、「…にずれ込む」とありました。
LDOCEでは、" to take more time or money than intended"や"if a place is overrun by unwanted things or people, they spread over it in great numbers"などと表現されていました。
つまり、「土砂に覆われた、占領された」という意味から転じて、「土砂が流れ込んだ」となるかと思います。(Akim)

英検感想
先日、英検を受験してきました。まず、全体的な印象としては、やはり難しかったです。
ただ、今回は受験に向けて語彙を増やすように単語帳やゼミでの英検プリントの復習の時間を増やしたおかげで、前回よりも見覚えのある単語が増えました。しかし、しっかりとinputされていなかったため、意味をはっきりと思い出せず悔しい思いをしたので次回に向けて、深く広く語彙を増やしていきたいと思います。
エッセイでは、今回も自分の知識の無さに苦しみました。普段から日本の社会や政治の仕組みをしっかりと知っておくべきだなと実感しました。
次回の受験に向け、早めに対策を進め、次こそは少しでも合格に近づくように頑張ります。(Akim)
英検 振り返り
昨日，英語検定の1次試験を受けてきました。
受験して改めて実感したのは，英語のあらゆる技能が未熟であるということです。これまでゼミで多くの語彙・表現を学んできましたが，復習が十分でなかったこともあり，語彙問題では一度目にしたことのある単語があっても意味がわからず解けなかった問題が多かったです。
また読解問題では，語彙・表現ももちろんですが，限られた時間の中でも早く読んで必要な情報だけ取り出す練習が必要だと感じました。最後の聴解問題では，音の同化などの音変化によってところどころ聞き取れない箇所があったので，英語の音声を聞きとる練習だけでなく，音声学を学び理論的にも理解できるようにしたいと思いました。(ninetails)
英語検定 感想
昨日、英語検定を受験しました。自分なりに良かった点と悪かった点をそれぞれの分野別に記したいと思います。
最初は語彙です。覚えていた単語はすんなりと答えることが出来ましたが、どうしてもうろおぼえの単語が出できてしまいました。曖昧な単語を少しでも減らしていきたいと思います。
次は長文です。英文自体に抵抗はなかったのですが、馴染みの薄い分野だったので読解に苦戦しました。今後は英語だけでなく一般教養の知識も積極的に取り入れていきたいです。
3番目は英作文です。前回よりは少しばかり論理的に書くことが出来ましたが何より時間がかかりすぎました。限られた時間の中で文を組み立てる訓練をしなければと反省しきりです。
最後はリスニングです。一文一文聞き取ることは出来ましたが、全体像を覚えることが出来ず設問に答えられないことが多くありました。リテンションの能力が足りないことを強く実感しました。
これらからわかるのは、まだまだ圧倒的に英語の能力が足りないということです。4月から社会人になるので、勉強できる時間は圧倒的に少なくなります。今のうちにかじりつくような勉強をしたいと思います。(Mt.Fuji)
insulation 復習
サムスンは自社製品であるギャラクシーノート7で生じた不具合の原因を明らかにしましたサムスンの発表によると原因はバッテリーにあるとのことです。バッテリーの配置を製品設計の都合上，適切でない位置に配置したことが，原因です。
記事の中で気になった単語は"insulation"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）を調べると「絶縁, 絶縁体; 断熱(材); 防音(材)」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"The action of insulating something"と定義されております。サムスンは，ノート7の後継機を販売すると述べております。7で生じた技術上の問題を踏まえた上で，開発を行ったため問題はないと述べておりますが，消費者の反応が気になります。(Ume)
Samsung confirms battery faults as cause of Note 7 fires
The recall is thought to have cost $5.3bn (£4.3bn) and was hugely damaging for the South Korean firm's reputation.
On Monday, Samsung said that neither software nor hardware were at fault, only the batteries.
Internal and independent investigations "concluded that batteries were found to be the cause of the Note 7 incidents", the South Korean technology giant said in a statement.
So what went wrong?
The company said that errors both in design and manufacturing affected batteries by two different manufacturers.
According to the findings, the problems centred on insufficient insulation material within the batteries and a design that did not give enough room to safely accommodate the batteries' electrodes.

今回は見出しのmaulを取り上げます。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、名詞で「（ラグビーの）モール，大木づち，掛け矢」と載っておりました。動詞では「（動物が）（人を）引っかいて傷つける」や「（木など）を打ち割る」、「…を乱暴に扱う」、「…を酷評する」、「（スポーツで）簡単に負かす」などと定義されておりました。
今回の見出しでは動詞で使われており、「引っかいて傷つける」という意味が当てはまるかと思います。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)には、 “(of an animal) wound (a person or animal) by scratching or tearing”と説明されておりました。こちらからも分かるように、特に動物の攻撃を指すようです。
