KYOTO--Gamers got a sneak peek of Nintendo Co.’s next-generation console when a preview video of the "Nintendo Switch” hit the Internet on the night of Oct. 20.
The approximately 3-minute long video, which was shown online from 11 p.m., offered a taste of Nintendo’s first new game console since the Wii U went on sale in 2012.
The Nintendo Switch will go on sale around the world from March 2017. It can be placed in a dock to be used as a traditional home game console connected to a TV screen, and removed from the dock to be used as a handheld device complete with a small video screen and control buttons.
The price of the Switch, as well as its exact release date, are to be announced at a later date.
However, it has been confirmed it will be compatible with the latest version of Legend of Zelda, the popular action-adventure game, which is to be released next year.
The latest version of the Super Mario series is also expected to be eventually included in the Switch software lineup.
Satoru Iwata, then-Nintendo president, revealed in March 2015 that development was continuing for a totally new game console concept.
Current company President Tatsumi Kimishima said in April 2016 that the new console would hit the global market in March 2017.

大学模擬授業 感想
昨日、K県にある高校でUG先生が70分の授業を行われ、私たちゼミ生も先生に同行させていただきました。
授業は70分の1コマで、内容はパラ言語的指導を活用した音読でした。生徒全員が授業にしっかり取り組んでいて、授業の最初と最後では生徒との声や音読に対する意識も明らかに変わっていました。今まで先生が高校生に今回のような音読の指導をされることがありましたが、正直、私が参加した中では一番変化が大きいと感じました。
授業の中で、私たちゼミ生が教壇に立ってお手本を見せることが何度もありましたが、私に関しては発音や声の表情など音をコントロールできていないと実感しました。日ごろから音読の練習をしたり、ネイティブのイントネーションを聞いたりなどして、音の自動化につなげていきたいと思います。
教育実習を経験してこのような場に慣れたこともあり、これまでよりもあまり緊張せず授業を楽しむ余裕がありましたが、英語力や生徒を引きつける話し方など自分の未熟なところを見つける良い機会になりました。
最後になりましたが、このような機会を与えてくださったUG先生、学校関係者の方々、本当にありがとうございました。(ninetails)

アメリカだけで視聴可能なNetflixの動画を見るために，NordVPNを経由して違法に動画を取得する抜け穴があるようです。Netflixは，違法に視聴できないよう対策を施しているが上手くいかないようです。

Mosul battle: IS 'may use civilians as human shields'
In Kirkuk, IS fighters attacked government buildings, killing at least six police officers, and a power station under construction, where 13 employees died.
Twelve IS fighters were also reportedly killed.
The BBC's Richard Galpin, in northern Iraq, said IS had attempted an "audacious" counter-attack on Kirkuk that had tried to show it was still a force to be reckoned with. The attack was "clearly aimed at diverting the Iraqi army" from Mosul, he said.

UPDATE: Quake rattles buildings in Tottori; 6 injured
Tottori Prefecture in western Japan was struck by a series of major earthquakes on Oct. 21, causing structural damage to some buildings and homes and at least six injuries.
A quake measuring lower 6 on the Japanese intensity scale of 7 was recorded at 2:07 p.m.
The focus was about 10 kilometers underground, and the temblor had an estimated magnitude of 6.6.
Shaking was felt in a wide area of western Japan and as far as the Kanto and Kyushu regions.
Japan Meteorological Agency officials urged caution because there was a possibility of another quake measuring lower 6 in intensity striking over the next week in areas where the shaking was particularly strong.

今回はoff-limitsを取り上げます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べますと、形容詞で「立ち入り禁止の」とありました。Merriam-Websterには “not to be entered or used” と説明されており、「立ち入り禁止」以外に「使用禁止」も表すようです。offとlimitsに分けて考えると、offは…から離して、…に乗って（接して）いないという意味を表す接頭辞であり、これにlimitsがつくことで、越えてはいけない境界線の前に留まっているイメージがわきました。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「ひと刈りの幅」「大部分の地域」という意味から広々とした草原が思い浮かびましたが、今回はアメリカ東部の地域で被害があったということで牧草地のような広大な土地のある地域からニューヨークなどの都市部も含んだ「広い地域」を指していることがわかりました。LDOCEでは“a long thin area of something, especially land”とあり、帯状の地域のようなニュアンスがあると思いました。

栗の歴史についての記事について取り上げたいと思います。
Kuri’: The nutty staple of ancient Japan
Fresh chestnuts are one of the few things in Japan that are truly seasonal and not available year-round like so many other food products these days. Chestnuts (kuri in Japanese) have been consumed here since prehistoric times. Charred chestnuts that are more than 9,000 years old have been found in and around the archaeological sites of Jomon Period (10,000-200 B.C.) settlements.
At the 5,500-year-old Sannai-Maruyama site in Aomori Prefecture, evidence of large-scale cultivation of chestnuts has also been discovered — as well as a huge chestnut tree in the center of the settlement that was probably used for religious rituals — indicating their importance as a food source in the days before rice cultivation became widespread. The chestnut wood was valued as building material as well as firewood. Chestnuts are still used in Shinto rituals in some parts of the country, and they’re an important osechi (New Year’s holiday cuisine) dish: a concoction of mashed sweet potatoes with kuri no kanro-ni, chestnuts cooked in sugar syrup. Chestnuts cooked with a crushed gardenia seed are supposed to bring good financial fortune and help make you a winner in life.
