Crafting one-of-a-kind prostheses

Surrounded by the whirring of machinery, craft workers with serious expressions on their faces made molds for artificial limbs.

Aiwa Prosthetics and Orthotics Co. in Nerima Ward, Tokyo, produces custom-made artificial limbs. Many customers, even though they live a long way from this Tokyo manufacturer, visit for its silicone products, carefully painted with layers of color to faithfully reproduce the appearance of skin.

中略

Hayashi joined this industry because of a book he came across about qualifications. He had an interest in crafting things and social welfare, so he entered a vocational college to become a prosthetist and orthotist, and developed the skills necessary for his current work.

Medical-Dictionary.com に “orthotist” は “a person skilled in orthotics and practicing its application in individual cases” と定義されています。
