Nintendo Switch next-generation console makes its debut online
KYOTO--Gamers got a sneak peek of Nintendo Co.’s next-generation console when a preview video of the "Nintendo Switch” hit the Internet on the night of Oct. 20.
The approximately 3-minute long video, which was shown online from 11 p.m., offered a taste of Nintendo’s first new game console since the Wii U went on sale in 2012.
The Nintendo Switch will go on sale around the world from March 2017. It can be placed in a dock to be used as a traditional home game console connected to a TV screen, and removed from the dock to be used as a handheld device complete with a small video screen and control buttons.
The price of the Switch, as well as its exact release date, are to be announced at a later date.
However, it has been confirmed it will be compatible with the latest version of Legend of Zelda, the popular action-adventure game, which is to be released next year.
The latest version of the Super Mario series is also expected to be eventually included in the Switch software lineup.
Satoru Iwata, then-Nintendo president, revealed in March 2015 that development was continuing for a totally new game console concept.
Current company President Tatsumi Kimishima said in April 2016 that the new console would hit the global market in March 2017.
