元を取る
今日は夕方からバイトをしていたのですが、お昼にいっぱい食べすぎたせいなのかバイト中吐き気が治まらず、何回かトイレにこもるはめになってしまいました。一緒に勤務していた先輩にはご迷惑をおかけしてしまいました。
そこでその事を友達に伝えたときに、「私はビュッフェに行くといつも気持ち悪くなるくらい食べちゃうんだよね。元を取りたいから。」と言おうとしたのですが、（ちなみに今日のお昼はビュッフェには行っておりません。）「元を取る」を何と言ったら良いのかわからなかったので、早速調べてみたところ、Weblioに "to recover a cost; to recover an expense; to get a return on one's investment; to get one's money's worth "と何種類か表現が載っていました。
どの表現が一番ナチュラルか友達に聞いたところ、get one's money's worthが一番よく使われるそうです。

昨日行われた選挙の結果，舛添新東京都知事が誕生しました。今回取り上げる単語は”romp home in”です。Wisdom英和辞典（第三版）』（三省堂）によると「（人・競走馬などが）楽勝する」という意味でした。新都知事は対抗者に対して100万票以上の差をつけて大勝したため，この単語が使われたのだと思います。

Bolivia Mudslide Buries Village; 4 Dead, 9 Missing
Heavy rains caused a mudslide that buried a small Bolivian settlement, killing at least four people, local officials said Sunday. Nine more people are listed as missing.
Jimena Alegre, an official for the Morochota municipality, told The Associated Press by telephone that the mudslide occurred Saturday night in the Quechua community of Chuypakasa and buried the homes of 15 families.
Rescue squads were digging through the site in hopes of finding more survivors. The first responders were from Cochabamba, which is about 220 kilometers (135 miles) east of the capital of La Paz.

以前にも取り上げましたが、「リュウグウノツカイ」が今度は生きたまま捕獲されたそうです。その左右一対のひれ（腹鰭 ふくびれ）の先端が「（小舟などの）オール」（oar）のように膨らんでいることからきた命名だといわれています。
非科学的ですが（先般、秋田でもあがっており）、一連の珍事がただただ何かの前兆でないことを再び期すのみです。（Shou-VR*）
Another rare deep-sea fish caught in Toyama
Another rare deep-sea fish has been caught alive in Toyama Bay, central Japan.
The oarfish, or king of the herrings, is about 150 centimeters long. Its thin body has orange fins about one meter in length.
The fish was caught in a fixed net about 2 kilometers off Toyama City on Friday morning and taken to an aquarium in nearby Uozu City.
The aquarium says oarfish are believed to live at depths of more than 200 meters.
The fish is the seventh to be found in Toyama Bay and the first to be taken alive to the aquarium.
It has several wounds and is severely weak, but the aquarium says it will try to keep the fish alive.
On Monday, another rare deep-sea creature, a ribbonfish, was caught in the bay, but died about 2 hours later.

Abe Pick Wins Poll For Tokyo Governor
A former welfare minister backed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe handily won Tokyo's gubernatorial election Sunday, brushing aside his rivals' attempts to turn the election into a referendum on nuclear policy.
Buoyed by the endorsement of Mr. Abe's popular coalition, 65-year-old veteran lawmaker Yoichi Masuzoe swept to victory after focusing on largely uncontentious issues such as the success of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, earthquake preparedness and elder care.
His main rival was Morihiro Hosokawa, a 76-year-old former prime minister, who was backed by another former prime minister and mentor to Mr. Abe, Junichiro Koizumi, to tap the considerable antinuclear sentiment among Tokyoites, many of whom want to permanently close all of the nation's nuclear reactors.
The pair created a lot of buzz initially, but failed to gain traction in part because of competition from another antinuclear candidate supported by the Communist Party.
The election outcome provides relief for Mr. Abe. Restarting nuclear power plants shut down after the 2011 Fukushima disaster is a priority for his administration, as the nation's huge energy import bills threaten to undermine economic growth brought on by Mr.
Abe's stimulus policies known as "Abenomics."

Japanese baseball sensation Masahiro Tanaka chartered his own Boeing 787 Dreamliner to fly him to New York, with the entire plane taken up by his five-strong party and his pet dog.
The ace pitcher, who has just signed a seven-year deal worth $155 million with the New York Yankees, is believed to have splashed out 20 million yen of his own money on the one-way flight.

Australia's carmaking industry has traditionally received billions of dollars in subsidies from the government.
However, a national commission recently recommended that the financial support should be ended and that car companies should cut costs instead.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) called Toyota's decision "devastating" and warned the move could cause an economic recession.
"The magnitude of this decision in the community cannot be underestimated," AMWU National Vehicles Secretary Dave Smith said.
