This episode echoed an earlier conundrum at the controls of BMW's new 5-series Touring estate. The first of two diesel variants we tried, the 530d, was equipped with Variable Damper Control, or possibly Adaptive Drive, in either case incorporating the Drive Dynamic Control chassis configurator that apparently offered four ride quality settings to choose from: Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+.

estateというと，「私有地」や「財産」，「階級」などの意味が想起されますが，イギリス英語でstation wagon（後部に折りたたみ［取りはずし］式座席があり，後部扉から荷物を積み降ろしできる自動車）を指します（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第2版，研究社）。
ちなみに，記事にもあるsaloonはイギリス英語でsedanを指します（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。（院生 小山本）

小山本もお世話になっているJASSO（日本学生支援機構）奨学金の滞納問題に関するJT Onlineにあった記事の見出しを採り上げます。

A business report for fiscal 2009 of the Japan Students Services Organization (JASSO), a student loan provider under the wing of the education ministry, shows that many borrowers are having difficulty repaying their debts, apparently because of the economic downturn, which makes it difficult for graduates to get stable jobs.

以前，このブログでも少し触れていますが，見出しにある動詞のblueは「〈金を〉乱費する」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。Pくんの記事では例文がなかったので，今回採り上げてみました。

また，記事にdelinquent borrowersという表現が出てきますが，delinquentは「非行の」という意味の他に「〈負債などが〉延滞の, 滞納している」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。さらに，同じような意味でbe in arrears for~（〜間返済が滞って）という表現も押さえておきましょう。（院生 小山本）
doff＆tip
イチローがとうとう10年連続200本安打を達成しました（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20100924/1285283889）。達成直後イチローはヘルメットをとって観客に挨拶をしました。このヘルメットをさっととって挨拶する行為を英語で何と表現されているのかDY(09/25/10付け)から探してみることにしました。
The Seattle Mariners Ichiro Suzuki doffs his hat to fans on Thursday after collecting his 200th hit of the season, a single against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning.
別の箇所には以下のような文もありました。
His teammates came to the top step of the dugout to applaud and Suzuki tipped his cap as the crowd gave him a standing ovation.
最初のdoffを辞書で調べると「《文》（あいさつなどで帽子）を脱ぐ，を持ち上げる」とありました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。tipも同様に調べるとこちらにも「（あいさつのため）（帽子）をちょっと持ち上げる，…にちょっとさわる」と出ていました（『スーパーアンカー』同上）。どちらも同じ意味ですが，辞書に書いてある通りdoffはtipよりも堅く，文語で用いられる表現のようです。（ゼミ生 camel）
find one’s feet
FIFA.comでは，週末にEuropean League’s Previewという記事を掲載しています。ここで，プレミアリーグやリーガ・エスパニョーラなどの動向をチェックすることができるのです。以下は記事の一部引用。
In Schalke’s case, that will mean a chance to build on their belated first win of the campaign, while many will be keen to see how Chelsea react to their first setback of 2010/11. Elsewhere, Lyon will be desperate to find their feet against derby rivals and surprise Ligue 1 leaders Saint-Etienne, Barcelona and Real Madrid hope to locate top gear in Spain and Serie A champions Inter Milan could streak even further clear of Roma and AC Milan. ここで採り上げる表現はfind one’s feetです。辞書によると，「（幼児が）立って歩けるようになる」という意味があり，そこから「自立出来るようになる，自分の能力を発揮できるようになる」と変化した意味も持つようになりました（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。今回は，後者の語義が当てはまりますね。ここでは「（ベストを尽くし）何が何でも勝ちにくる」と解釈できるのではないでしょうか。
ちなみに，この表現に似たものでstand on your own two feet「自立する」があります。

titular
Camelくんに続いて，小山本もイチローネタでいきます。sourceはJT OnlineにあったIchiro's achievement testament to his driveという記事。
Famed Japanese baseball historian and author Robert Whiting made him the titular focus of his book, "The Meaning of Ichiro," and Ichiro famously moved a fan to hysterics with the slightest of touches in Seattle earlier this season.

太字のtitularは以前，ブログでも田邉先生が採り上げられていました。

その中で「久しぶりにこの単語に出会いました」と先生が述べられているように，このtitularは並の英語学習では知らないレベル単語の1つ。それが今回のイチロー関連の記事で再び出てきていたので採り上げることにしました。
titularは第一義に「名ばかりの」という意味がありますが，先生の記事どうように今回はどうやらもう1つの意味のようです。辞書で調べてみると「題名の，タイトルの；名前の由来になった」とあり，the titular hero of the book（その名が本のタイトルになった主人公）という例文もありました（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第2版，研究社）。
ちなみに同辞書によると，語源はラテン語でplacardあるいはtitleという意味するtitulusだそうです。（院生 小山本）

再び，JT OnlineにあったIchiro's achievement testament to his driveという記事から。
On that train of thought, it's worth noting that through 18 professional seasons Rose had played in 2,830 games and had 3,557 hits. Ichiro after Thursday's game — counting his time with Orix — had 10 games left in his 18th professional season and 3,508 hits in 2,559 games.
…Rose's train of thought on Ichiro is understandable. He's proud of his status as the Hit King and has to know Ichiro could surpass him in the minds of many when the whole of their careers are laid out side by side.

今回注目したのはtrain of thoughtという表現です。何となく意味は掴めますが，辞書で調べてみると，trainには「（できごと・観念などの）連続，連鎖，一連（of）」という意味があり，My train of thought was interrupted by a phone call.（電話が鳴って私の思考の流れはとぎれた）という例文も挙げられていました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。
「一連の」というと(a) string of~や(a) stream of~がすぐに想起されますが，Googleで調べてみると，(a) string of thoughtや(a) stream of thoughtという用法はあるものの，train of thoughtの数には遠く及びません。よって，対象がthoughtの場合はtrainを使うのが適当のようです。（院生 小山本）

先ほど，採り上げたFIFA.comのEuropean Leagues Reviewから英語表現を拾います。
Chelsea were beginning to look almost invincible after their perfect start to the season but the Premier League pacesetters suffered a home defeat at the hands of Newcastle United in the League Cup on Wednesday. They must now pick themselves up for their first true test of the championship campaign away against fourth-placed Manchester City, who harbour serious title ambitions of their own. City got the better of Chelsea home and away last term and will be desperate to prevail again in a match that is sure to be closely followed by third-placed Manchester United – who travel to Bolton – and Arsenal, second and at home to West Bromwich Albion.

今回の注目表現はat the hands of~です。辞書を引いてみると「[人]の手で，[人]のせいで」とありました（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。さらに，LDOCEを見るとcaused or done by a particular person-used about something bad or unpleasant that someone doesとありました。ここから，この表現はあまり良いニュアンスを含んでいないことが分かります。ここでは「〜に敗北を喫し」という日本語に解釈できそうです。
英語には体にまつわる表現がたくさんあります。是非一度調べてみてはいかがですか。

pole position
またまたFIFA.comのEuropean Leagues Reviewという記事から。
Barely a month into the new Spanish season and the usual suspects have already positioned themselves at the head of the class. Real Madrid took over in pole position in midweek and they plan to still be there following their journey to take on Levante. Second-placed Valencia are away against Sporting Gijon and Atletico Madrid, in sixth, are gearing up to welcome Real Zaragoza. 太文字のpole positionに注目してください。文脈から意味が想像できますが，ここでは「首位に立つ」と解釈できます。しかし，pole stationのもともとの意味は「（カーレースの）ポールポジション《レース開始時に最も有利な最前列の内側の位置》」です。ここから派生して，「（トラック競技で）一番内側の位置，最も有利な立場」という意味になりました（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。
ここでは，gearing upなどの単語も使われていることから，リーグ戦をまるでレースに例えていることが分かります。（ゼミ生persimmon柿生）
お金のpocket
今回はDorothy KoomsonのThe Ice Cream Girls p.151から英語の落ち穂拾いをしていきます。
"Just because we don't live in each other's pockets, doesn't mean there's something wrong with our relationship,' Mez snaps.
注目するのはlive in each other's pocketという表現です。文脈と直訳から考えると，「家計を共有する」という意味ではないでしょうか。辞書をみてみるとbe [live] in each other's pocket「《主に英略式》〈２人が〉いつも一緒にいる，互いに依存している」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第四版，大修館書店）とありました。ここでは，「お互い独立しているから」のように解釈出来ると思います。
辞書をさらに見ていくと，pocketにお金の意味を含む表現がいくつかありました。
・be in [out of] pocket
《英》手元にある［ない］；（取引などで）もうけて［損して］いる
・live beyond one's pocket
収入［資力］以上の生活をする

本日の取り組みで，横綱白鵬は自身の連勝記録を61に伸ばし，双葉山（元横綱）の持つ69連勝まで8勝としました。今日はThe Mainichi Daily News（2010/09/25 付）の記事から英語表現を拾っていきます。（以下記事の見出しと本文抜粋）
Sumo: Hakuho reaches last hurdle toward history
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Mongolian grand champion Hakuho has reached his last hurdle en route to immortalizing himself in the pantheon of the Japanese national sport as arguably one of the greatest yokozuna of all time.
今回は本文のimmortalizing himself in the pantheonの部分を採り上げます。まず，immortalizeには「〔小説，映画，芸術作品などの形で〕〈人・物〉に永遠の命を与える，…に不朽の名声を与える（in）」と記されています。
次にpantheonを辞書で引いてみると「パンテオン〈27.B.C.建立のローマの万神殿〉」以外に，「[the P~]（一国の偉人を祭る）殿堂，パンテオン」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。これらの意味を繋ぎ合わせると「白鵬という名（連勝記録）殿堂に入れ不朽の名声を与える」という訳が出来ます。
今まで“殿堂入り”という言葉はHall of Fameなどで覚えていましたが，上記のような言い方も出来るのですね。もっと多くの言い回し表現を身につけていきたいと思います。（ゼミ生 gacha）
muscle
DY（9/25/10付）のPetrobras ups 70 bil. dollar in world’s offeringという記事から英語表現を拾っていきます。これはブラジルの国営の石油会社ペトロブラスが，広大なオフショア石油埋蔵量をタップする必要がある金融筋を与え，正解最大規模の700億円を提供するという内容です。
Brazilian state oil company Petrobras raised 70 billion dollar Thursday in the world’s biggest share offering, giving the company the financial muscle it needs to tap vast offshore oil researves.
今回採り上げる表現はmuscleです。以前にも紹介されていましたが，muscleには「筋肉」以外に，「力，威力、圧力，影響力」という意味があります（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20100528/1275017605
よってここではfinancial muscleで「経済力」のように訳せますね。
