太文字のpole positionに注目してください。文脈から意味が想像できますが，ここでは「首位に立つ」と解釈できます。しかし，pole stationのもともとの意味は「（カーレースの）ポールポジション《レース開始時に最も有利な最前列の内側の位置》」です。ここから派生して，「（トラック競技で）一番内側の位置，最も有利な立場」という意味になりました（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。
