　insulate / ínsəlèɪt/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「<人・物>を〔不快なものから/…に対して〕隔離［保護］する」や「〈物体〉を絶縁体で覆う、…を〔…から/…に対して〕絶縁する、防音［断熱］する、遮断する」とありました。LDOCEではto cover or protect something with a material that stops electricity, sound, heat etc from getting in or outやto keep someone apart from particular experiences or influences, especially unpleasant onesと定義されています。

　ラテン語で「島」という意味のinsulaが語源となっています。insulateから「絶縁体」はinsulatorというそうです。(rain)
