　islet /άɪlət/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「小島、小島に似たもの」とありました。LDOCEでは“a very small island”と定義されています。veryとついているくらいなので、本当に小さな島を指しているのだと思います。画像で検索してみましたが、小さな島の写真が多くみられました。
　島という意味のラテン語、insulaが語源だそうです。また、-letは小さいものを表す接尾辞であるということが分かりました。ほかの例としてはstarletやbookletなどがあるようです。(rain)
