　今回調べたのはin line / iːn lάɪn /です。文脈や朝見たテレビのニュースから王位継承のことを表しているのだと予想ができました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「〔昇進・地位などを/…する〕得る見込みで,〔…の〕候補で」とありました。

LDOCEで調べたところ、be 序数 in line to the throneという様に使われることが分かりました。意味は言うまでもないとは思いますが、to be the person who has a right to become a future king or queenとありました。

　また、lineには「家系, 血統, 系列」という意味もあるようです。ここから転じてできたものではないかと思います。ちなみにイギリスでmarriage linesで「結婚証明書」という意味になるそうです。（rain）
