Through her efforts, the treaty of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) will be published in the maternal handbooks that will be delivered to all expecting mothers in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward in fiscal 2019. The notebooks are provided to record children’s preventative inoculations and growth, particularly during their early years.

上記の記事の中にinoculationがあります。今回はその動詞形であるinoculate /ɪˈnɒkjəleɪt/ を以下で調べていきます。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)には「...に(病気・ウイルスの)予防接種をする」とあります。LDOCEではどうでしょうか。 “to protect someone against a disease by putting a weak form of the disease into their body using a needle” と定義されています。最後にOxford Living Dictionariesを用いて語源を確認してみるとLate Middle English (in the sense ‘graft a bud or shoot into a different plant’): from Latin inoculat- ‘engrafted’, from the verb inoculare, from in- ‘into’ + oculus ‘eye, bud’. The sense ‘vaccinate’ dates from the early 18th century.とありました。

今、この瞬間にも世界中には貧困に苦しんでいる子供たちがいます。もちろん日本だけをみても暴力やいじめが蔓延っているのが現実です。そういった問題を解決するために何ができるか。今度は大人がそれを考えていく番であると思います。(seventh-dan)
