ferocious 復習
朝日新聞にある天声人語からです。平成30年北海道胆振東部地震について書かれています。
Buildings have been swallowed by flood waters, flattened by landslides or broken apart by ferocious winds. I have been forced to see too many scenes of the sudden, heartbreaking destruction of people’s normal lives.

取り上げるのはferocious /fəˈrəʊʃəs/ です。文脈から「強い」とあります。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「獰猛な、(血に飢えたように)残忍な、凶暴な、(程度が)すごい、ひどい、(決意などが)並々ならない、(感情が)激しい」とあります。
また、LDOCEでは “violent, dangerous, and frightening” “very strong, severe, and unpleasant” “relating to an emotion that is felt very strongly” と定義されています。例文としてはThese bears look ferocious, but attacks by them are extremely rare.やFerocious competition has pushed computer prices down.が挙げられています。Oxford Living Dictionariesをみると “Mid 17th century: from Latin ferox, feroc- ‘fierce’ + -ious.” とありました。
今年は様々な自然災害に見舞われる年となりました。北海道では最大震度7の地震があり、日本はこれから大丈夫なのかと心配になります。首都直下型地震も近い未来に予測されている中で、もしもの時を意識して日々の備えの大切さを改めて肝に銘じたいです。(seventh-dan)
