light at the end of the tunnel 復習

夏季語学研修の宿題の一つに、自分の読んだニュース記事のpersonal responseを書いて提出するというものがあります。前回選んだ記事はタリバンについてのものでした。Personal responseの中でI cannot see the end of this battleといういかにも今までの戦いの流れを見てきたかのような一文を書いてしまったのですが、返却されたときにはI cannot see the light at the end of the tunnelという文に直されていました。「トンネルの終わりにある光」という直訳と元の文章からなにか長く続いていることの終わりを表すのだと考えましたが、きれいな訳が浮かばなかったので調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “an indication that a long period of difficulty is nearing an end”

Collins Free Online Dictionary: “When you talk about the light at the end of the tunnel, you are referring to the end of the difficult or unpleasant situation that you are in at the moment”

Cambridge Dictionary: “signs of improvement in a situation that has been bad for a long time, or signs that a long and difficult piece of work is almost finished:”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「希望の光」

「（苦難の末）光明を見出す、希望を見出す」という意味で用いたい場合はseeを用いて、see the light at the end of the tunnelの形で表すことができます。

また『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）には例文をしてThere’s a light at the end of the tunnel.「トンネルを出れば明るくなるよ《落ち込んでいる人を勇気づける表現》」という記載がありました。（ko-chi @ Calgary）
