先生のご著書でもとりあげられていますが，本日，取り上げる表現は、gloss over です。gloss の発音は /glάs/ となります。艶を出すための化粧品として使われている「グロス」ですが、この記事では動詞として使われています。どういった意味で使われているのか、以下で確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“to avoid considering something, such as an embarrassing mistake, to make it seem not important, and to quickly continue talking about something else” とあり、LDOCE には “to avoid talking about something unpleasant, or to say as little as possible about it” と定義されていました。
次に類義語を確認すると、LDOCE に skirt が挙げられています。Cambridge Dictionary でこの動詞形をみると “to avoid discussing a subject or problem, usually because there are difficulties that you do not want to deal with” と記載がありました。これらの表現は「覆い隠す」というイメージで共通していると言えます。
