Huge quake expected along Kuril Trench

A huge earthquake is likely to occur along the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench in the Pacific Ocean off Japan’s northern coasts in the near future, a government report showed Tuesday.

The likelihood of an earthquake with a magnitude of at least 8.8 taking place at the trench within the next 30 years stands at 7-40 percent, the government’s Earthquake Research Committee said in a revised report on long-term prospects of trench-type earthquakes.

　trench-type earthquakeを取り上げます。 “trench” というと, 春先に出回る「トレンチコート」のイメージが強かったため, 改めて確認したところ, 第一に「[軍]壕」とありました。ここから「深くて細長い溝」を指し, 「海溝 (cf.trough)」となったようです。 “trench” に対し, 後者の “trough” 「トラフ」は, 浅くて細長い「舟状海盆」を表します(『リーダーズ英和中辞典』研究社)。
　
　さらにMerriam-Webster.comによると, trenchは “a long, narrow, and usually steep-sided depression in the ocean floor”, 一方, troughは “a long but shallow depression in the bed of the sea” と定義されていました。

　ちなみにtrench coatは, 第一次世界大戦中に英国兵が塹壕内で着用していたレインコートに由来しているとのことです(『明鏡国語辞典』大修館書店)。(Cayu)
