preeminent/priːémənənt/を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』をみると「極めて優秀な;〔…に/…の中で〕抜群の、卓越した〔in, at / among〕;（ひどくて）目立つ」とあります。次にCambridge Dictionaryで定義を調べると“more important or powerful than all others”と記載されていました。また語源はpre-「前に」、eminent「突き出ている」からきています。
さらにprominentとの違いを探ってみます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』では「〈人が〉〔…の点で〕卓越した、目立った、突き出た」と載っています。Cambridge Dictionaryによると“very well know and important”と定義されていました。つまりpreeminentはprominentより「他と比べて卓越した」といったニュアンスが含まれいることがわかりました。(Kiwi girl)
