　海で泳いでいて亡くなったとみられる男性の遺体が石垣島で発見されました。

Okinawa shark attack feared as leg, man’s body found ashore

A male diver was found dead on Ishigakijima island on Oct. 31, about 2.5 kilometers south from where a right leg apparently bitten off in a shark attack was discovered the day before.

The two gruesome discoveries were of different people, as the 176-centimeter tall man’s legs were intact, an official at Ishigaki’s Yaeyama Police Station said.

The diving suit-clad body, with a diving fin attached to its left foot, was found at 10:40 a.m. on a beach.

According to prefectural police, a man and a woman in their 30s from Osaka Prefecture have been missing from the island since Oct. 23. Police are now investigating links between the two incidents.

　bite offを取り上げます。「離れる」という意味を表すoffがつくことで、「噛みちぎる」もしくは「食いちぎる」といった意味になると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』で引くと “bite off” または “bite away” で「（…）をかみ切る」とありました。また、これに関連して、 “bite off more than one can chew” という表現を見つけました。こちらは、かめる以上のものをかじり取るというところから、「（略式）手に余る仕事を引き受ける、力以上のことを引き受ける」という意味になります。
　先生によりますと，名曲 My Wayに"When I bit off more than I could chew"というフレーズがあるそうです。

　男性の右足は無事なままであったことから、見つかった右足は一緒に海へ行っていた行方不明の女性のものであるとみられています。（aqua）
