LUCKNOW, India (AP) -- Rescuers using cutting torchers and cranes worked through the night to pull apart 14 coaches of a crowded train that went off the tracks in northern India, killing 23 people and injuring more than 80 others, officials said Sunday.
Two of the coaches piled on top of one another, while 12 others toppled off the tracks, said Arvind Kumar, a top official in Uttar Pradesh state, where the train derailed overnight.

LDOCEを引くと“one of the parts of the train in which the passengers sit”、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）ではイギリス英語で「客室、車両」とありました。“14 coaches”で14車両の列車であったことがわかります。
“coach”は他にも「昔の大型四輪馬車」も指し、“drive a coach and horses through O”で「（議会・計画などを）ぶち壊す、覆す」となります。
昨年この単語を取りあげた先輩たちの記事も今回事故の起きた場所と同じインド北部のウッタルプラデシュ州での脱線事故についてで、同国では過去5年間で起きた586件の鉄道事故のうち半数以上は脱線事故だったそうです。(flying bird)
