play (one's) cards 復習
本日は、先週の、水爆とみられる北朝鮮の核実験について述べた New York Timesの記事を取り上げます。筆者は北朝鮮当局の関係者と長年に渡って面会を繰り返している経験から、北朝鮮の当局関係者達は多くのアメリカ人が持つイメージに反して、イデオロギーの受けているというよりもむしろ非常に現実的な外交的視点を持つ者であると述べています。
本日は記事より"play (one's) cards"を拾います。

"cards"は日本語における「トランプ」のことであり、"play cards"では「トランプゲームをする」(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』)との意味になります。英語では"trump"は「切り札」を表します。トランプと呼ばれるようになった由来は、開国をした明治時代に、外国人がトランプでゲームをしているのを見て、「切り札」を表す"trump"をカードのことと勘違いしたことが由来だと言われています。
今回の記事に使われている表現、"play one's cards well"は直訳をすれば「トランプをうまくやる」のようになりますが、そこから由来し、イディオムとして「(話) うまく事をすすめる」の意味になります。"well" 以外に、"properly"や"right"を用いても同様の意味になり、"badly"を用いて、反意(下手に事をすすめる)にする事も可能です。Cambridge Dictionaries On-lineには"to behave in a way that gives you an advantage or allows you to succeed at something"と定義されています。以下例文です。
You have a chance of success if you play your cards right.

トランプと同じ、ゲームに関連して、
記事では、"when the chips are down"という表現も使われていました。
For decades, Americans thought Mao Zedong was an irrational, unstable dictator. But when the chips were down, he also turned out to be a serious realist by opening better relations with President Richard M. Nixon and Henry A. Kissinger after his relationship with Moscow deteriorated.
「(くだけて)いざという時は」という意味ですが(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』)、この表現は"chips"は賭けをする際、お金の代わりとなる「チップ」のことであり、チップをすべて机に置いて、ポーカーで最後の賭けをするところから来ています(Online Etymology Dictionary) 。この表現は、以前にブログでも紹介されていました。(Dew)
