nincompoop

本日は新しく “nincompoop”という単語に出会いましたので、ご紹介いたします。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「ばか，まぬけ」と載っておりました。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “a foolish or stupid person”とのことでした。

どうやら語源には様々な諸説があるようです。

インターネットサイトWORLD WIDE WORDSには、 “Many writers have tried hard to find an origin for it, though most dictionaries play safe and list it as “origin unknown”.”と書かれておりました。ラテン語が語源であるという人もいれば、オランダ語などの他の言語が由来だと唱える人もいるようです。(http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-nin2.htm)

ちなみにODEには、 “perhaps from the given name Nicholas or from Nicodemus (by association with the Pharisee of this name, and his naïve questioning of Christ; compare with French nicodeme ‘simpleton’”と載っておりました。ちなみに “Pharisee”は「パリサイ人」でキリスト教の論敵とされている人のことを表すようです。（G5）

最近のドナルド・トランプ氏に関するニュース記事の小見出しでは “Kenney fired back, calling the Republican presidential nominee a "nincompoop."などと使われておりました。 “nincompoop”が強調されています。それだけトランプ氏のことを嫌っている、あるいは呆れていることが分かります。
