北朝鮮の景勝地・金剛山で、朝鮮戦争などで生き別れになった南北離散家族の再会行事が行われ、家族たちが約６０年ぶりに感動の再会をしました。

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Hundreds of elderly Koreans from divided North and South began three days of reunions with loved ones many have had no contact with since the war between the countries more than 60 years ago.
About 390 South Koreans, some in wheelchairs, some leaning on walking sticks, traveled to the North's scenic Diamond Mountain resort, taking with them long johns, medicine, parkas, calligraphy works and cash to give as presents to about 140 family members in the North.

今回拾い上げる表現は、“long johns”です。この表現を見た際、どんな意味なのだろうと疑問に思いました。そこで、まず意味を確認してみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には、「長い下着」と記載されていました。他の辞書も調べてみると、「ももひき、ズボン下」とありました。また、“long johns”と同様の意味で、“long underwear”という表現があります。さらに、なぜこの表現が生まれたのか気になり、調べてみると、１９世紀に重量級のボクサーJohn Lawrence Sullivanがももひきのようなものを履いて試合をしていたことから“long johns”という言葉になったそうです。
これから寒い冬の季節になっていきます。今後long jonhsを使う人が増えていくかも知れませんね。(Nao)
