A newborn girl was found abandoned on a road here on Nov. 3, sparking a police investigation, law enforcers said.

A 38-year-old man phoned police at about 7:20 a.m. on Nov. 3, reporting the discovery of the baby girl. She showed symptoms of hypothermia, but her condition was not life-threatening, police said.

Hokota Police Station has launched an investigation, suspecting abandonment of responsibility as a caregiver.

Investigators said that the girl was about 50 centimeters tall and weighed 3,100 grams. She had been abandoned at the side of the road, without clothing. Her umbilical cord was still attached.
