A man arrested for putting up posters without permission in a bookstore where copies of "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank were vandalized has hinted at his involvement in a wave of vandalism at public libraries in Tokyo, investigative sources said Thursday.

The statements of the unemployed Tokyo man in his 30s, however, have so far been ambiguous and require further investigation, they said.

More than 300 copies of the diary and related books have been vandalized at public libraries in the Japanese capital, but the police are investigating whether the man can be held criminally liable given his unstable behavior, the sources said.
