今回取り上げたいのは、heart-wrenchingです。wrenchは「＜物＞を（〜から）もぎ取る、ひったくる」などの意味がありますが、wrenchingは「苦痛を伴う、胸が痛むような」という意味があるようです。（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館）また、heart-wrenchingは「胸が痛むような、胸を締め付けるような、痛ましい」と定義されていました。（英辞朗 on the WEB）　さらにWiktionaryでは、”Having a painful emotional impact; causing grief or distress”とありました。

突然、子どもを３人も失ってしまうなんて、あまりに辛すぎます。自動車での事故は、一瞬で命を奪ってしまいますね。気をつけても防げない事故もあると思いますが、自分からは起こさないようにしたいです。(Nat)
