　heart-wrenchingを取り上げます。wrenchにはねじるという意味があることから、精神的につらい状態であることが予想できます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「胸の張り裂けるような、悲痛な」とありました。

　Cambridge Free English Dictionary and Thesaurusには “causing great sadness or sympathy” と定義されています。悲しみだけではなく、同情の気持ちも含まれるようです。

　wrenchだけでは、名詞で「（別れの）悲しみ、悲痛、苦痛」、形容詞の形のwrenchingは「悲痛な、痛ましい；つらい」という意味をそれぞれ持ちます。（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）。
