fender /fɛ́ndɚ/ を取り上げます。この単語を見るとギターのメーカーしか思い浮かばなかったので、さっそく自転車に関連する意味を調べてみました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「1（米）（自動車などの）フェンダー、（車輪の）泥よけ（英 wing）；（自転車の）泥よけ（英 mudguard） 2炉格子、フェンダー（壁炉の前に置き、燃える石炭が落ちるのを防ぐ柵）」とありました。アメリカ英語とイギリス英語ではそれぞれ呼び方が異なることがわかりました。

　LDOCEにはいくつか定義がありましたが、今回は “a curved piece of metal over the wheel of a bicycle that prevents water and mud from flying up” が適すると考えられます。

　子どもをおんぶして自転車に乗ろうとすると嫌がって泣いてしまうため、胸の前にくるようにして自転車に乗らなければならないことがあるという意見も出ており、なかなか規定に沿う乗り方が難しい場合があるようです。（aqua）
