boneというとどうしても「骨」が浮かんでしまいますが、自動詞で「[科目を/試験に備えて]詰め込み勉強する（＋up)[on/for]」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版，大修館書店）という意味になります。LDOCEにも"to learn as much as you can about a subject, because you need the knowledge, for example for an examination"と載っています。
また、英辞郎 on the WEBによるとこのＰＶの語源には「19世紀半ばのアメリカの学生のスラングで、イギリスの安価な古典のテキスト"Bohn's Classical Library"から作られたとする説」があるようです。この説が本当だったらおもしろいですね。テキストを一度拝見してみたいです。
