discredit/ strange tale

The Scienceから英語表現を拾います。森口氏についての（現在のところ）最新インタビューの記事がありました。見出しのdiscreditは「…の評判を悪くする」「…の信用を傷つける」という意味の他に「学説をくつがえす」という意味があります(『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館)。どちらの意味も含んでいるのでしょう。かなり皮肉めいております。

さらにstrange taleのtaleは、（当たり前ですが）、「物語」「つくり話」や「嘘；偽り」という意味ですね。それにstrangeがついているのですから、相当の皮肉です。普通科学の分野で、誰かの研究に対してstrange taleとは言いませんし、発言に対してstrange taleという評価を下しません。ネガティヴな意味があるから使われます。剽窃は犯罪ですし、誰かの研究や功績に泥を塗るような行為は、研究するものとして恥ずべき行為だと強く思います。(Othello)
