Katayama says she was 'thoughtless' to give free Diet pass to 'secretary'

Regional revitalization minister Satsuki Katayama admitted she was "thoughtless" to have provided a pass to the House of Councillors to a tax accountant who worked as her private secretary and has been implicated in influence-peddling allegations, during a Diet panel session on Nov. 9.

Katayama has been accused by Shukan Bunshun weekly magazine of contacting the National Tax Agency on behalf of a company operator that allegedly paid the secretary 1 million yen in exchange for lobbying for tax breaks in 2015.

中略

Yuichi Goto, a legislator of the opposition Democratic Party for the People, lashed out at Katayama during the lower house panel session, saying, "All you do is make false answers to Diet questions," in sarcastic reference to her book titled "Shinjitsu no giron" (Truthful discussion). Goto pressed her to answer whether she intends to resign over her allegations.

LDOCEには “saying things that are the opposite of what you mean, in order to make an unkind joke or to show that you are annoyed” と定義されています。 同じく皮肉を意味するironyとの違いが気になったので調べてみると “when you use words that are the opposite of what you really mean, often in order to be amusing” とあり、面白みを出すために言うところがsarcasmとの違いのようです。

(aqua)
