Elation to agony: Yankees rally, then lose game, Jeter

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees lost Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday night, a 6-4 loss in 12 innings to the Detroit Tigers.
And they also lost the one player often thought indispensable to any Yankees postseason run.

Shortstop and captain Derek Jeter was carried off the field in the 12th inning after suffering a fractured left ankle. The injury requires at least a three-month recovery period.
"I'm sad for him," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We have to move on. We have the opportunity to do something great."

Jeter went down in a heap while he ranged to his left to field a ground ball hit by Jhonny Peralta. Jeter did not get up as Peralta beat out the play for an infield single and pointed to his left knee before being picked up by Girardi and head athletic trainer Steve Donahue and carried to the dugout.
