Drunk driver plows into line of cars, killing one motorist

Police said Monday they have charged a 35-year-old man with vehicular homicide after he caused a six-car pileup in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Sunday, while driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver of one of the cars died in the accident, police said.
According to police, the suspect, who has been named as office worker Takeshi Kaito, crashed his car into the rear of a line of cars and a truck approaching a red light on Route 246 at about 3:10 a.m., Fuji TV reported. Police said three of the cars caught fire following the crash. The driver of the first car, Kentaro Sato, 35, from Machida, died at the scene.
During police questioning, Kaito was quoted by police as saying he had been drinking at a bar in Ebina, Fuji reported. He said he was trying to light a cigarette when he rear-ended the car in front of him.

homicideは「殺人」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館)）を意味する語です。私はもともとmurderも知っていたのでその差が気になったため調べました。(OALD)
homicide: the crime of killing sb deliberately ( compare culpable homicide )
murder: the crime of killing sb deliberately
OALDには全く同じことが書いてあったため、また英和に戻ったところmurderの記述に「homicideは過失による殺人も含む」と書いてありました。つまり様々な「殺人」の中でも正当防衛や過失のような広い範囲で使えるものだと思います。（あまり使える世の中にはなって欲しくはないですが。）同じく、激情によって起こった「殺人」であるmanslaughterも載せておきます。(Minnesota)
