THE SECOND COMING follow-up

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
大きく円を描き，旋回する鷹に，
鷹師の声は届かない
物事はバラバラになり，中心が崩壊し，
世界は混沌に包まれる
血に染まった濁流が押し寄せ，
純潔の儀式を飲み込む
善良な者は信念を失い，悪人どもは情熱をたぎらせる

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
確かに啓示が迫っている
確かに“再臨”は近づいている
“再臨”この言葉を口にすると
巨大なイメージが現れて，わたしの視界を遮る
砂漠のどこかで，獅子の胴体と人間の頭をした怪物が
太陽のごとく虚ろで非情な目を向け
ゆっくりと歩き出す
怒れる砂漠の鳥たちがその周りに影を落とす
再び闇が訪れ，わたしは悟る
2000年もの石のような眠りは悪魔と化してしまった
荒々しい獣の時がついにやってきた
ベツレヘムの方角に身をかがめ，生まれようとする

Spiritus Mundi はラテン語でsoul of the worldという意味，Bethlehemはキリストの生地で，ダビデ王の故地です（『スーパー大辞林』）。

世界が秩序を失い，混沌の時代に入る，そのような時代に，闇が訪れ，世界は滅亡するだろう，とWilliam Butler Yeatsは言うのです。この詩が発表された1919年は，イエス・キリストが再臨するとしている前千年王国説が現実をおびたものとして注目された時期です。こんな戦争などしている世界には，キリストが約2000年の眠りから覚め（再臨し），世界を滅亡させてくれた方がいい。このようなメッセージがこの詩から読み取れます。（Sugiuchi）
