be in a class of one's own

The Guardianに任天堂の『スーパー・マリオ３D』のレビューがありました。さっそく英語表現を拾いたいと思います。

Mario may have starred in some rather naff games over the years, but when it comes to platform adventures, he's in a class of his own. This may explain to some degree why Super Mario 3D Land is the first new game produced for the 3DS that justifies the cost of the console all on its own. It really is that good.

本文ではかなりマリオの新作を褒めています。さて、最初に赤字で示したhe’s in a class of his ownから見てみましょう。『アドバンスド・フェイバリット英和辞典』であれば、classの第６義にある「《口語的》(動作などの)気品、上品さ；〈方法・技術などの〉みごとさ、鮮やかさ」という定義がしっくりきます。さらに、be in a class of one’s ownは、「抜群に優れている」と訳されています。LDOCE 4th Eds.で定義を確認してみますと、第７義に次のように定義されていました。“a group into which people or things are divided according to their quality or ability”、さらにin a class of its own/ in a different classで“better than everything else”とありました。ここから、レビュワーがいかにマリオを褒めているのかがわかります。

また、platform adventuresについてですが、インターネットで調べてみると、いわゆるアクション・アドヴェンチャー・ゲームのことであることがわかりました。これは、アクション・ゲームにRPGの要素を取り入れたゲームであると説明されていました。

以上を踏まえると「マリオはここ数年かなり時代遅れのゲームに出演してしまっていたのかもしれないが、マリオがアクション・アドヴェンチャー・ゲームの世界に登場すると、マリオはやはり段違いに素晴らしい！」と訳せるかと思います。(Othello)
