the Japanese people are so resourceful

田邉先生に続きます。実際，このようなときにどんな話題を書けばいいか悩んでいましたが，The Ovalに掲載されていたObama大統領のコメントの中から少しでも前向きな表現を拾います。
In the meantime, Obama and much of the rest of the world ponder the future of Japan.
Said Obama:
When we face these kinds of natural disasters, whether it's in New Zealand or Haiti or Japan, then you think about your own family and you think how would you feel if you lost a loved one, or if your entire lifesavings were gone because of the devastation.
And the Japanese people are such close friends of ours, and I have such a close personal friendship and connection to the Japanese people -- in part because I grew up in Hawaii where I was very familiar with Japanese culture -- that that just makes our concerns that much more acute.
But I am very confident, though, obviously, that the Japanese people are so resourceful, Japan is such a powerful economy and such an advanced economy technologically, that Japan will successfully rebuild. And it has experience dealing with natural disasters. It has dealt with them before and will deal with them again. And Japan, I'm sure, will come back stronger than ever -- hopefully with our help.

今回に気になったのはthe Japanese people are so resourcefulという文です。resourceというと「（国の）資源, 富」（『プログレシッブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味を思い浮かべる人は少なくないと思います。この意味だとresourcefulも「物質的に恵まれた」のような意味にとれます。事実，辞書でresourcefulを調べると「資源に富む, 資力のある」（同上）とありました。
しかし，Obama大統領の発言は日本人の資力を指しているわけではありません。resourceには上記の意味の他に「（困難を乗り越えるとき力を発揮する）（人の）内面的資質，精神力」（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）という意味があるのです。よって，the Japanese people are so resourcefulは「日本人は困難を乗り越えるだけの強靭な精神力と豊かな知力を持っている」と解釈できます。
以前，NZの震災に関する記事にも同様の英語がありましたが，Japan will come back stronger than everを信じましょう。（院生 小山本）
