U.S. students experience Japan culture firsthand

About 30 American high school students studying Japanese culture and language enjoyed a firsthand experience of the nation on Monday in Tokyo’s Asakusa and Akihabara areas, dipping into Japan’s traditions and pop culture.

The students are prize winners in the National Japan Bowl, a Japanese language competition established by the Japan-America Society of Washington D.C. in 1992. This year, the competition was held in Maryland in April, with 170 students from 28 high schools tackling quizzes with questions such as “What do you call the sumo retirement ceremony that involves cutting off the topknot?”

They visited Japan as part of the Kakehashi Project, a Foreign Ministry program that fosters exchanges between the young people of Japan and North America. In an eight-day program that started July 19, the students also visited Nagasaki, exploring sites such as the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and Oura Cathedral.

　“dip into” を取り上げます。dipと聞くと、ソースなどを少し付けるイメージですが、intoが加わるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「(1) …をちょっと調べる; …にざっと目を通す　(2) …に手を入れて（お金などを）取り出す　(3) （貯金など）に手をつける」とありました。

　LDOCEには “to read short parts of a book, magazine etc, but not the whole thing” や “to use some of an amount of money that you have” などと定義されています。

　記事の “enjoyed a firsthand experience of the nation on Monday in Tokyo’s Asakusa and Akihabara areas, dipping into Japan’s traditions and pop culture” という部分から、日本の伝統とポップカルチャーの両方を調べながら、浅草や秋葉原での文化体験を楽しんだことがわかります。以前ブログには“dip one’s toe into”という表現が取り上げられていました。（aqua）
