今日のDY（09/14/10）にあったLos Angels TimesのJapan centenarians cause concernという記事から。
And every person belongs to a family registry that documents marriages, births and deaths dating back generations. In theory, officials can dig up a rich paper trail on anyone.
今回，気になったのはin theoryという表現。辞書ではよく「理論上は」という意味で掲載されていますが，この表現には字面以上の意味が含まれます。
in theoryを英英で引いてみると，something that is true in theory is supposed to be true, but might not really be true or might not be what will really happen（LDOCE）とありました。つまり，記事のIn theory, officials can dig up a rich paper trail on anyone.からもわかるように，「理論上は可能だが，実際には不可能」，つまり「計算上は」というニュアンスがin theoryには含まれていることがわかります。（院生 小山本）
