今回はostensibly / ‐səbli / を紹介します。
『ロングマン英英辞典』には、“if something is ostensibly true, people say that it is true but it is not really true” とありました。また『ジーニアス英日辞典』第４版（大修館）では、「表面上（は）」とありました。
単語の成り立ちは、os=ob-(前に)＋tendere(伸ばす[ラテン語])で「見えるところまで伸ばす」というところから「見せかけの」といった意味になるのではないでしょうか。(amphibian)
