今回は見出しにあるpad /pˈæd/ を紹介します。見出しを読んだだけでは意味の推測ができなかったのですが、記事の内容から「部屋」と予想しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には第７義に「ベッド, 宿屋, 家, 部屋, アパート」とあり、やや古い表現になります。LDOCEは “someone’s apartment or the room where they live” と定義していました。以上のことから「シャンシャンの部屋」と解釈できます。(amphibian)

日本大学は会見を開き、少なくとも3年前から医学部の一般入試で追加の合格者を選ぶ際に卒業生の子どもを優先して入学させていたことを認め、謝罪しました。

見出しで使われているnepotism /népətìzm/ を取り上げます。卒業生の子どもをひいきしていたことが問題となっていたので、「ひいき」という意味ではないかと考えました。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』を確認したところ、「縁者[身内]びいき、(特に官職への)縁故者登用」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“the practice of unfairly giving the best jobs to members of your family when you are in a position of power”と定義されています。職業の登用に関するひいきを表すことが多いようですが、今回は入学者のひいきを表しています。
ちなみに、Weblio辞書によると語源は“Borrowing from French népotisme, from Italian nepotismo, from Latin nepōs (“nephew”), a reference to the practice of popes appointing relatives (most often nephews) as cardinals during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.”と説明がありました。nephewが同根の表現なんだそうです。(Blue Sky)

視覚障害者がマラソン競技に出場する際に隣で伴走をする「ガイドランナー」の数が不足しています。
Lack of guide runners becomes hurdle for Tokyo Paralympians
As the top visually impaired marathon runners prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, they are facing an unforeseen hurdle on the path to glory — a lack of qualified guide runners (see below) to help them navigate the course.
An elite runner needs 10 or more guide runners to properly train for a major race, but only a handful have been able to secure them. unforeseen /`ʌnfɔɚsíːn/ を取り上げます。見た目から考えると「先行きの見えない」という意味になるかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「予期せぬ、思いがけない」とありました。例としてunforeseen circumstances で「不測の事態」が挙げられています。
LDOCEには “an unforeseen situation is one that you did not expect to happen” と定義されています。後ろにくる語としては “unforeseen problems/difficulties/delays” などがあるようです。
ガイドランナーについて少し調べてみました。視覚障害のある選手をゴールまで誘導するランナーのことで、手をつないだり、50cm以内の紐を使って走路を指示したりし、走りながら声をかけて選手の誘導を行うそうです。選手の前方に出ることや選手を押すこと、戦術に関するアドバイスを与えることはしてはいけないというきまりになっているとのことでした。走るという体力だけではなく、選手にとって必要な情報を短くわかりやすい言葉で伝える判断力も求められることから、ガイドランナーになることはなかなか難しいことなのだろうと思いました。（aqua）
volatile 復習

今回取り上げる語は、volatile /ˈvɒlətʌɪl/ です。「揮発性の」という意味を持つ語ですが、今回はその意ではありません。ちなみに揮発性とは「常温で液体が気体になる」性質(スーパー大辞林参照)を指します。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“likely to change suddenly and unexpectedly, especially by getting worse”とあり、LDOCE には“a volatile situation is likely to change suddenly and without warning”と定義されていました。
単に変化するだけでなく、何か悪いことが伴って突然変化することを指すと言えます。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Middle English (in the sense ‘creature that flies’, also, as a collective, ‘birds’): from Old French volatil or Latin volatilis, from volare ‘to fly’.”とありました。
以上のことから、今回の volatile は「不安定な」という訳をつけることが出来ます。(OkaUchi)
rascal 復習
今回紹介するのは rascal /ˈræs.kəl/ です。こちらもOne Dayを鑑賞していた際に出会った単語です。実際のシーンでは、主人公が罵声を浴びせていた言葉の中にrascal登場していたので、slangの一種なのではないかと推測しました。以下で定義等の確をしていきます。
初めにCambridge English Dictionaryを引くと、“a person, especially a child or a man, who does things that you disapprove of, but who you still like.” とあります。
続けてCollins English Dictionaryにて同様に探ると、“If you call a man or child a rascal, you mean that they behave badly and are rude or dishonest.” と載っていました。
念のためOxford Dictionariesにて語の由来を調べると、“Middle English (in the senses ‘a mob’ and ‘member of the rabble’): from Old French rascaille ‘rabble’, of uncertain origin.”とありました。
まとめると、rascalは、人に悪く振る舞って失礼な態度を取る「いたずら者、悪ガキ」を指すと同時に「どうしても憎めない」というニュアンスを含む単語であると思われます。また、大元の語源は古フランス語のracaille「悪党、暴徒、ギャング」に由来することが分かりました。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
deus ex machina
メモの中に合った単語を取り上げます。deus ex machina / deɪəsɛksˈmɑkinə / です。見た瞬間の印象は「なんだこれ」です。ラテン語由来の単語であろうという予想はできましたが、意味はさっぱりだったので以下で確認していきます。
Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel”
Collins Online Free Dictionary: “in ancient Greek and Roman plays, a deity brought in by stage machinery to intervene in the action” “any unconvincing character or event brought artificially into the plot of a story or drama to settle an involved situation”
Merriam-Webster: “a god introduced by means of a crane in ancient Greek and Roman drama to decide the final outcome” “a person or thing (as in fiction or drama) that appears or is introduced suddenly and unexpectedly and provides a contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：【ラテン】「(劇・小説などで)急場しのぎの不自然な解決をもたらす人［物］」「（ギリシャ劇で）急場を救うため突然舞台の登場する神」
語源はOEDによると “Late 17th century: modern Latin, translation of Greek theos ek mēkhanēs, ‘god from the machinery’. In Greek theatre, actors representing gods were suspended above the stage, the denouement of the play being brought about by their intervention.”とのことです。
意味を確認してから思い返してみると、おそらくシェイクスピアの授業で出てきた単語だと思われます。テストに向けて復習しなければ（ko-chi @ Calgary）

runner-upを取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「（競争・競技などで）二位のもの［チーム］」とありました。LDOCEではthe person or team that comes second in a race or competitionと定義されています。
runner-upはsecond placeよりも「長い期間争った結果、惜しくも一位には届かなかった」というニュアンスがあるようです。この表現はスポーツに関するものでよく見られます。ちなみにrunner-upを使うと３位はsecond runner-upと表現することもできるそうです。(rain)

取り上げるのはdisseminate /dɪˈseməneɪt/ です。dis-があるので、マイナスな意味を持つ単語でしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(情報・知識・考えなど)を広める、普及させる」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “to spread information or ideas to as many people as possible” と定義されています。「英・語・源」をみると、ラテン語のsemis(=the half of anything)に由来していることが分かりました。
これからの東京オリンピックに向け、日本の忍者文化は主要な観光コンテンツになろうとしています。それに備え、日本人も忍者について勉強する必要性が出てきます。(seventh-dan)
