Four of the seminar members went to Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) last Sunday. It is a bit far away from where we live but it was worthwhile going there.
One thing learned from the workshop by Dr. Tanabe was the importance of learning English actively. He let us in on the intricate details of how we went about actualizing Active Learning in class. Indeed, doing some activities in pairs was truly interesting in that I had a chance to talk with a student who is an exchange student from the mainland China.(Sixth-dan)
Stay-log from Nebraska Week 8
It is 7:44, July 9th in Nebraska now. Two months have passed since I came to the States. For IEP, I’ve got only one more week to go. Let me look back on the last two months.
I guess I got used to my campus life here on weekdays. I have four classes from 8:30 through 15:20. After that, I go out to the café near the campus to do my homework.
However, I still have not set up my routine on weekends. Now that I exhausted all the cafés, I kind of tired of going to any of them.
I now realize that my life in Tokyo is always surrounded by a lot of interesting things. In other words, there's a lot of places you can go and enjoy yourself there. Tokyo is indeed a place where you cannot get easily bored.

今回はspike withを紹介します。サッカーなどに使われる「スパイク」が動詞になるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。まず、『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「＜飲み物に＞[アルコール・薬物を]加える[with]」とありました。Oxford English Dictionaryでは “Add alcohol or a drug to contaminate (drink or food) surreptitiously” と定義されていました。また、飲料にアルコールを加えることを意味する俗語表現です。
この記事では、看護師が点滴に毒物をspike with「加えた」をいう表現になると思います。またこの容疑者は他の患者約20名を同じ手口で殺害したそうです。(amphibian)

今回取り上げる語は、delirium /dɪˈlɪrɪəm/ です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(三省堂書店、第3版)で調べてみると「(医)譫妄症、一時的精神錯乱」とありました。では、今回の記事ではどういった意味で使われているのか、以下で確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“a state of extreme excitement or happiness” とあり、Collins Dictionary には “violent excitement or emotion; frenzy” と定義されていました。
また語源を OED でみると、“Mid 16th century: from Latin, from delirare ‘deviate, be deranged’ (literally ‘deviate from the furrow’), from de- ‘away’ + lira ‘ridge between furrows’.” とありました。
以上のことから、delirium は「有頂天、興奮状態」という意味だということがわかりました。(OkaUchi)

先日、死刑が執行された松本智津夫死刑囚の火葬が行われました。
A family dispute is brewing and concerns about renewed cult activities are growing over the cremated remains of Chizuo Matsumoto, the Aum Shinrikyo founder and convicted mass murderer who was executed on July 6.
The body of Matsumoto, who went by the name of Shoko Asahara when he masterminded a series of crimes by his followers, including the 1995 sarin nerve gas attack in Tokyo, was cremated in the capital on the morning of July 9.

今回取り上げるのはgo by the name ofです。文脈から改名したといった意味ではないかと思いました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）にはgo by the name ofは載っていなかったのですが、by the name ofは「通称…という名で」とありました。更に、go by the name of Blockと例文があり、「ブロックという名前で通っている」とあったのでgo by the name ofは「…と言われている」という意味だと考えられます。
OEDにはCalledと記載されていました。
通り名を指す時に使われる表現のようです。goというのがなんだか不思議な感じがしましたがgo byには「〈うわさなどが〉広まる;〔…の名で〕知られている」といった意味があるということを確認できました。(rain)
hectic 復習
Advanced writing and readingの授業中に、気になる単語と出会いました。本日は、授業の冒頭に、物事の優先順位の付け方のABCを知る機会がありました。その中で出てきたhectic /ˈhɛktɪk/を紹介します。
まず始めにMerriam Websterで確認してみると” characterized by activity, excitement, or confusion”また、“red, flushed”と記されておりました。これらのことから「忙しい」または、「顔を赤らめる」といったあたりの日本語が妥当かと思われます。
次に『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)を引いてみますと、「（予定・日・生活などが）大変忙しい、てんやわんやの」また、「（顔・頬が）紅潮した」と記されておりました。(WREN@Nebraska)
cutie pants 復習
日々の生活の中で分からない英単語やその言い回しに出会う度にメモを取っては調べの繰り返し作業なのですが、やはり「こんな言い方があるのか」という新しい発見ができるのは嬉しいものです。その嬉しさを感じたものが１つ、今回紹介するのはcutie pants です。
本日行われた語学研修の授業の終わり際、夏休み中にescape roomをしに行こうという話で盛り上がっていたのですが、そんな私達の様子を見て先生の方は、“You guys are cutie pants !” と笑いげに仰いました。以下で意味等確認していきます。
Slang Define (https://slangdefine.org/c/cutie-pants-111d8.htm) よると、“Pertaining to a female with amazing features, usually of face and body, that warrant mentioning to one’s friends. Ex:) Now that girl… she is a cutie pants.”とありますが、授業で先生が使われた状況に当てはまるとはいえません。念のため、pantsを『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（第五版、学研プラス）で調べたものの、「パンツ、ズボン、スラックス」以外の記述はありませんでした。
関連語としてfancy pantsを見つけたので少し掘り上げたところ、この場合pantsが示すのは「少年、子供っぽさ」のことで、「気取った少年のような」となることが分かりました。これを前提とすると、cutie pantsの訳語として「かわいらしい子供達のよう」「君らはしゃいでいるね」あたりが近いでしょうか。
まとめますと、遊びの話になった途端にこぞって無邪気になる学生の姿が先生の目に映ったことからそのようなフレーズを言われたのだと思われます。上記では触れませんでしたが、pantsは他にも様々な形で用いられるそうです。cf. by the seats of pants, the pants off, wear the pants

multifaceted 復習
本日の授業の中で読んだ記事の中から気になった単語を取り上げます。multifaceted / mʌ̀ltifǽsətɪd / です。“fairness is a multifaceted concept that can take on different meanings”といった文脈で用いられていました。最初に読んだときにすっと意味が頭の中に入ってこなかったので、調べてみました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）には「｟正式｠多面的な；多方面にわたる」と載っています。意味を見てはっとさせられました。multi +facetですね。facetは同書によると「（心・問題・性格などの）面、様相」「（多面体、特に宝石の）一面、切り子面」とあり、さらに連結要素として-faceted「…の面を持つ」との記載もありました。facetという単語はもともと知っていたのにも関わらず、意味が予測できなかったことにショックを隠せません。ただ何かしらのインパクトと共に覚えた表現や単語は忘れにくいので、facetとmultifacetedを強く記憶に残すいい機会になったと考えています。
Oxford Dictionary of English (2th)には“have many sides” “having many different aspects or features”と定義されています。
単語自体を知らなくても、その構成から意味を予測できるように連結要素等にも気を配っていきます。[ko-chi @ Calgary]

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(多数の人が)出ていくこと、大移動、(活動などから)手を引くこと、離れること、出エジプト記、エジプト脱出」とありました。また、LDOCEでは “a situation in which a lot of people leave a particular place at the same time” と記載がありました。
「英・語・源」で由来を見てみると、ギリシャ語のhodos(=way)であることが分かりました。
欠航の対象は11路線にも渡り、その影響は36,000人にも及ぶと見られています。欠航は来月にかけて続く見通しのため、お盆休みの帰省にも影響が出そうです。(seventh-dan)

今回気になったのは、remainsです。文脈から遺骨と推測しました。以下で確認していきます。
まず、LDOCEで引いてみると第二義に、“the body of someone who has died”とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には「遺体、遺骨」と載っていました。ラテン語の“remanere”「後ろにとどまる」からきた単語のようです。
以上のことから記事では、オウム真理教の前教祖であった麻原彰晃の遺骨を引き渡す準備をしているといった訳になると思われます。過去のブログでもたくさん取り上げられていました。（Otoyo）

日産自動車は新車の出荷前に行う排ガス性能の検査についての結果を改ざんしていたことを発表しました。
Nissan admits tampering with data
Nissan Motor Co. said Monday that it had tampered with data on fuel economy and exhaust emissions at its five plants in the country, including the Tochigi plant in Kaminokawa, Tochigi Prefecture.
The automaker altered data of 1,171 vehicles, which is more than half for which it conducted sample inspections.
The latest data falsification once again brought to the fore Nissan’s sloppy inspection practices. Last year, Nissan admitted workers without proper authorization had conducted final inspections on some vehicles. Nissan continued to commit the falsification even after the revelation of this scandal.
According to Nissan, the automaker deliberately tampered with fuel economy and gas emission data if figures measured during sample inspections on finished vehicles substantially deviated from standards set by the company. Nissan said the original measured figures meet standards set by the government.

LDOCEには “to touch something or make changes to it without permission, especially in order to deliberately damage it” と定義されています。
今回の調査によると、国内にある全6つの工場のうち、5つの工場でデータの改ざんが行われていたとのことです。（aqua）
