文脈から、「報復」ではないかと推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(...に対する)仕返し、報復」とありました。また、LDOCEでは “action against someone who has done something bad to you” と記載されていました。
goo辞書を見てみると、語源はラテン語のretaliare(re＋talio)であることが分かりました。
talioは「同害刑」を意味します。
教祖の死刑執行により、この事件は１つの区切りを迎えました。しかしまだ問題は残っています。それは「松本元死刑囚を含むオウムの幹部の遺体は誰の手に渡るのか」です。どうするかを慎重に見極め、全てが終わるまでは本当の解決とはいきません。(seventh-dan)

今回気になったのは、mobilize /móʊbəlὰɪz/ です。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず、LDOCEで引いてみると、“to start to use the things or people you have available in order to achieve something”とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「〈人・物〉を集結する、集める」とありました。
続いてODEで語源を調べてみると、“mid 19th cent. : from French mobiliser, from mobile (see MOBILE).”と定義されていました。

今回はdeluge / déljuːdʒ / を紹介します。文脈から「豪雨」と予測しました。
まずOxford English Dictionaryでは “A severe flood.” また “A heavy fall of rain.” と定義されていました。確認のため『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「大洪水, 大水」また「[聖書]ノアの大洪水；豪雨, 大雨」とありました。
続いて語源を調べたことろ、ラテン語diluvim「洪水」から派生しており、同じ意味の単語でdiluvial「洪水の, (特に)ノアの洪水の」があります。
この被害で多くに犠牲者が出てしまいました。やはり人間は「自然」に太刀打ちできないのでしょうか。悔しい思いが募るばかりです。

lubricate /lúːbrəkèɪt/ に注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「油をさす、円滑に運ぶようにする、買収する」といった意味があります。『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をひらくと “to use a substance such as oil to make a machine operate more easily, or to prevent something sticking or rubbing” とあり、機能がより活発になるように手を加える様を表していると窺えます。
goo 辞書によると lubricate は “lube” と短縮形で用いられる場合もあり「潤滑油」と名詞的な意味で使われる場合もあれば、動詞として使用されることもあるとわかりました。

今回取り上げる表現は、fawn over です。fawn の発音は /fˈɔːn/ となります。この語は名詞で「子鹿」という意味を持ちますが、今回のように動詞で用いられるとどういった意味になるのでしょうか。以下で確認していきます。
まず Cambridge Dictionary をみると、“to praise someone too much and give them a lot of attention that is not sincere, in order to get a positive reaction” とあり、Macmillan Dictionary には “to be extremely nice to someone more important than you because you want them to like you or give you something” と定義されていました。
また、fawn の動詞形の語源を ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY でみると、“Middle English faunen, from Old English fagnian "rejoice, be glad, exult, applaud," from fægen "glad" (see fain); used in Middle English to refer to expressions of delight, especially a dog wagging its tail (early 14c.), hence "court favor, grovel, act slavishly" (early 15c.).“ とありました。

先週はプレゼン、課題、テストなどが重なり、忙しい週となりました。そんな中一人の先生がこのような状況をcrunch timeと表現するとおっしゃっていました。今回はこの表現に焦点を当てていきます。以下定義を見ていきます。
Merriam-Webster: “a critical moment or period (as near the end of a game) when decisive action is needed” “the most important time in a game, event, etc.: a critical moment”
Cambridge Dictionary: “a point at which something difficult must be done”
英次郎on the webには「試練の時」という訳が与えられていますが、ほかにも「正念場」や「踏ん張りどころ」といったような日本語も当てはまるのではないでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）でcrunchを引いてみると「｟米略式｠[通例the〜]（のるかそるかの）瀬戸際の時、踏ん張り時(〜time)；ピンチ、危機、試練」と載っていました。
crunchは動詞で「…をポリポリ[ガツガツ]噛む、かみ砕く」（同書）という意味を持ち、「歯を食いしばる」というところから今回の表現に発展しました（過去ログ参照：crunch time - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から）
