今回取り上げる表現は，“dog-end”です。“end”は，「終わり」ですが，“dog”が付くことでどのような意味になるのでしょうか。
恥ずかしながら，見当が付きませんでした。そこで，調べてみると，「（英略式）たばこの吸い殻，無価値な残りもの」（コトバンク）とありました。ここでは，後者の意味が適しています。
また，なぜこのような意味になったのか調べてみると，きちんとした情報源ではないため正しいとは言い切れませんが，一つありました。“dog-end”は，元々犬のフンという意味で，昔，犬のフンが通りに多量に落ちていました。その後，人々がたばこを吸うようになり，犬のフンの代わりにたばこの吸い殻が増えていきました。そこから，犬のフンがたばこの吸い殻という意味に変化したそうです。(Nao)

国際交流会館に住む留学生はみんなアニメやゲームが好きで、中にはゲームマスターを倒す為に高田馬場のゲームセンターに行く人もいます。今日も、ある1人の留学生が、ゲームセンターの太鼓の達人に没頭して手にまめを作って帰ってきました。
そこで気になったのは、「まめ」を英語でどのように表現するかです。
カナダの留学生に聞いてみると、"blister"だよ、と教えてくれました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)で"blister"を調べてみると、1.「(皮膚の)水ぶくれ、(手足、かかとの)まめ」2.「水疱、疱疹」3.「(植物、ペンキ塗の板、金属板、ゴムタイヤなどの)ふくれ、気泡」とありました。また、動詞では、「(手足などを)水ぶくれにする、水ぶくれになる」とあり、さらに形容詞"blistering"では、1.「(太陽などが)水ぶくれを起こさせる(ほど熱い)」2.「(言葉などが)辛辣な、痛烈な」3.「とても速い」とありました。
「まめ」や「水ぶくれ」から連想できる意味がたくさんあることが分かりました。(Akim)

osteopathy
友達との会話で「整体に行きたいな」という会話になりました。「整体」や「整骨」とは英語でなんというのでしょうか。
『ウィズダム和英辞典』（三省堂）では「脊椎矯正（整体）は”chiropractic”、整骨療法は"osteopathy”とありました。
LDOCEでも” the treatment of physical problems by pressing on and moving the bones in someone's back and joints”、” a way of treating medical problems such as back pain by moving and pressing the muscles and bones”とそれぞれ定義されております。
osteopathyのosteoは「骨」を表すもので、関連語としてosteopathで「整骨医」ということがわかりました。（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第五版、大修館書店より）
ちなみに、「整骨医」と混同する単語として「接骨医」がありますが、これも同じく”osteopath”とありました。
日本語の問題となってしまいますが「整体院」、「整骨院」、「接骨院」は何がちがうのでしょうか。
調べてみたところ、整骨院と接骨院は同じもので「柔道整復師」という国家資格を持っている人が開業しており、保険がきく一方、整体院は資格がなくても開業でき、保険はきかないそうです。(flyingbitd)

“berth”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「(競技など)の出場権」という意味がありました。他にも「停泊位置」「(船・列車の)寝台」「職(特に船員の)仕事」など船舶に関連する意味が多くありました。由来を調べたところ、はっきりとわかりませんでしたが、オリンピック開催国の停泊地を確保したというニュアンスから「出場権」という意味ができたのではないかと思いました。(lua)

Fans get kickin’ good time from 'Kinky Boots'
“Kinky Boots” has kicked into town, and the flashy smash hit has everything you’d expect from a big-budget production.
The show won a Tony for Best Musical with its rock-out musical numbers (written by pop icon Cyndi Lauper), big-belting singers, gorgeous costumes, scantily-clad bodies, sympathetic story and of course, a glossy and brightly bling-ing Hollywood ending.
The plot may seem familiar to Detroit workers, with a different outcome. “Kinky Boots” is based on a true story.
Father (Horace V. Rogers) owns an aging shoe factory in a working-class city in England. Son (Adam Kaplan) escapes to London with his shiny and ambitious girlfriend, leaving that dreariness behind. Son must return to take over the business when his father passes, and discovers the factory can’t sell their men’s staid and stout oxfords, a low heeled laced shoe, because the Italian imports are cheaper. Can the factory re-tool for a more current marketing niche?

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)で調べたところ、形容詞で”outstanding”という意味があることが分かりました。
また『リーダーズ英和辞典』（第三版、研究社）でも引いたところ、「〈俗〉すばらしい（very good）」と載っておりました。
つまり” big-belting”は「とても素晴らしい」のような意味になるかと思います。

政府の人身取引対策推進会議は２０日、２０１５年に国内で人身取引の被害で保護された人が計５４人いたと発表しました。
54 rescued from human trafficking in Japan in 2015
TOKYO —A total of 54 people were rescued from human trafficking operations in Japan last year, up 29 from the previous year, according to a government report.
Of the rescued victims, some who were forced into prostitution and slavery, Filipinos made up the largest share by nationality at 30, followed by Japanese at 13 and Thai nationals at 10. Women were most targeted with 50 freed, while four males escaped forced bondage.
The annual report was approved Friday at a meeting of Cabinet ministers called to discuss the prevention of human trafficking. The government said releasing the data will raise public awareness, helping to end the practice.
“Human trafficking is not just a serious human rights violation, but also a significant international problem,” said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who chaired the meeting held at the prime minister’s office.
The meeting was attended by relevant Cabinet ministers including Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and National Public Safety Commission Chairman Taro Kono.
The government’s annual report, the second of its kind, was issued following the adoption of an action plan to fight human trafficking in December 2014.
The action plan called for the reinforcement of immigration controls and beefing up of support for trafficking victims.

オーストリアの大統領選挙は，大接戦となっているようです。現時点の開票結果では、僅差で極右政党のNorbert Hofer氏が優勢なようです。しかし，最終的に誰が大統領になるのかは，集計が完了する月曜日までわからないとのことです。各党で争点となっている一つは，難民への対応になります。極右政党は，難民排斥を訴えており，欧州委員会や欧州議会の代表は懸念しております。

秋田県鹿角市の山林で２２日、男性が死亡しているのが発見されました。遺体には動物に引っかかれたような傷があり、クマに襲われたとみて調べられています。この地区では２１日にも同じような遺体が見つかっており、今回で２件目の被害となってしまいました。
Two men killed in apparent bear attacks in Akita
AKITA — Two men have been killed in apparent bear attacks over the weekend in the same area of a forest region in Kazuno, Akita Prefecture.
According to police, the body of Noboru Takahashi, 78, was found at around 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Fuji TV quoted police as saying he had bite and scratch marks on his body consistent with a bear attack.
Takahashi and his wife had gone picking bamboo shoots in the forest on Sunday morning. His wife said they had been blowing whistles to scare away bears. However, they were approached by a bear and Noboru yelled at her to run away, after which his whereabouts became unknown. Police believe the bear mauled the man and dragged him away.
The area is known as a bear habitat, even though many locals frequently visit it to pick bamboo shoots.
In another apparent bear attack in the same area, police found the body of an elderly man on Saturday. His body also had bite and scratch marks.

どうやらpranceは主に馬の動作を表すようですが、この記事では華麗に舞う猫に使われています。
