今回取り上げる表現は、vis-à-vis /vìːzəví/です。英語かどうかも分からなかったので調べてみました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）に、「向かい合って（いる），相対して(いる)」という意味でフランス語が元であることが分かりました。
また手持ちの電子辞書に内蔵されているOxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)で語源を調べてみたところ、” mid 18th cent. : French, literally ‘ face to face’ , from Old French vis ‘ face’.” と載っておりました。
visはフランス語でfaceであることが分かりました。つまりàはtoと同じ役割なのでしょうか。もしフランス語に詳しい方がいらっしゃいましたら、是非教えていただきたいです。（Gomez）

今回取り上げるのは、“slap with”という表現です。“slap”と聞くと「平手打ち(を食らわす)」と連想しますが、ここではどのような意味になるのでしょうか。

More than 7,000 foreign nongovernment groups will be affected, according to state news reports.
Foreign groups working across Chinese civil society — on issues including the environment, philanthropy and cultural exchanges, and possibly even in education and business — will now have to find an official Chinese sponsor and must register with the police. This also applies to groups from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Umeさんもとりあげられましたが，オバマ大統領がホワイトハウス記者クラブ主催の夕食会で，大統領選の各候補者を毒舌でなで切りにしました。

今回取り上げる表現は，“rub elbows with”です。“elbows”と複数形であることから人と何か関わる意味であると推測が出来ます。そこで，どのような意味があるのか調べてみました。
Dictionary.comによると，“to mingle socially with”と“to associate with”の二つが載っていました。さらに，『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）を確認したところ，「〈有名人など〉と交わる」と記載されていました。
推測した通りで，人との交流を表していました。この表現が面白いのは，英国ではelbowではなく，rub shoulders (with)とshouldersが使われることだと授業で先生がおっしゃっていました。

今日は、寮への引越しの際に運べず残っていた荷物を取りに家に戻りました。荷物を取りに戻るだけで、とんぼ返りで帰ってこようと考えていましたが、急遽家族と食事をすることとなり、久しぶりの団欒の時間を楽しみました。
そこで、「とんぼ返り」を英語でなんというのか気になったので調べてみました。そもそも、「とんぼ返り」というのは、「目的地に着いて、すぐ引き返すこと」を表しますが、これは、「トンボが勢いよく飛びながら急に向きを後ろに変えること」からきているそうです。(広辞苑)第6版
まず、ネットで「とんぼ返り」を調べてみると、1."returning from a destination right after arriving there"2."non-stop round trip" 3."round trip without an overnight stop"

1単語で表現出来る単語が無いことに驚きました。
次に、「宙返り」などの意味を含む「とんぼ返り」を『ジーニアス和英辞典』(大修館)第2版で調べてみると、"flip" "somersault" "tumble"の3つが載っていました。
"somersault" は初めて見た単語なので掘り下げてみたいと思います。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館)第4版では、名詞で、「とんぼ返り、宙返り、(体操)前転(forward roll)」の他に、「(意見、政策などの)180度の転換」という意味がありました。
語源としては、プロバンス語の"sobresaut"からきており、"sobre"は、"over ; above" "saut" は、"jump"という意味があるそうです。(Weblio) (Akim)

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）で調べると、「（米略式）小型の路線バス」とありました。
Oxford dictionaries.comでは” North American informal A bus or other vehicle carrying passengers for a low fare.”と定義されております。
なぜ、新郎が路線バスに乗るのか気になり、ディズニーワールドの乗り物を調べると、マジックキングダムというパーク内をjitneyが走っているということがわかりました。

ほかの人とかぶりましたが，オバマ大統領はこの日が最後とされるワシントンで開かれたホワイトハウス記者会主催の夕食会に出席されました。そこでのスピーチは自身の後継者を選ぶ大統領選をネタにするなどジョーク満載だったようです。

見出しにある"one-liners"を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「短いがユーモアに富んだ言葉」という意味がありました。LDOCEでは"a very short joke or humorous remark"と定義されています。
毎年恒例の同夕食会では大統領がジョークを交え、ユーモアの溢れた演説するそうですが、今回オバマ大統領は多くのジョークを交えたスピーチで出席者を笑わせ、最後にマイクを落とすパーフォーマンスなど聞いていて面白かったです。(lua)

今回取り上げるのはnumbnessです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』(第5版、研究社)で調べてみますと、名詞で「無感覚、まひ、呆然」という意味があることがわかりました。Cambridge Dictionaries Online でも調べてみますと、 “lack of physical or emotional feeling” という意味であることがわかりました。呆然という表現はlack of emotional feeling と以外にもシンプルに表すことができるのだと知りました。nessを取った形がありそうでしたので調べてみると、ありました。numbは他動詞で「（…）の感覚を失わせる、しびれさせる、（ショックで）呆然とさせる」となります。

難病に対する薬の話題です。
U.S. approves first drug for psychosis linked to Parkinson's
(Reuters) - Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc's drug for psychosis linked to Parkinson's disease was approved in the United States on Friday, becoming the first treatment for the condition to get a nod in the country.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, however, asked Acadia to include a black-box warning, its strictest warning, on the drug's label for an increased risk of death associated with its use in older people.
An estimated 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease each year and about 1 million Americans have the condition, the FDA said in a statement, citing data from the National Institutes of Health.
The drug, Nuplazid, is expected to be priced at $13,500 per patient for a year and reach more that $1 billion in sales in 2021, according to Leerink analyst Paul Matteis.
Analysts have said the black-box warning will have limited impact on the sales of Nuplazid as antipsychotics often come with such warnings.
So far, the condition was treated with off-label antipsyhotic drugs including quetiapine, clozapine, risperidone and olanzapine.

今回取り上げる表現は、black-boxです。直訳すると「黒い箱」なので、なにか怪しげな意味があるのではと思いました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）で引いてみたところ、「フライトレコーダー，ブラックボックス〈機能は分かるが内部構造や動作原理の分からない装置〉」と載っておりました。
また手持ちの電子辞書にあるOxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、” a complex piece of equipment with contents which are mysterious to user”と載っておりました。
これらを踏まえ訳そうとしたのですが、良い訳が思い浮かばなかったのでインターネットで調べてみたところ、The Pharma Marketingというサイトに” A boxed warning, commonly referred to as a "black box" warning, is the most serious type of warning mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).”(一部抜粋) と記載されておりました。
Black-box warningはFDAが指令するものであり、薬学専門用語のようです。またこの薬は命に関わる危険度がかなり高いことが分かります。
