ここで気になったのはiconicという単語です。辞書で調べてみると「像の；アイコン[図形表示]を使った」「類焼的な」とありました。（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』）しかしこの意味ではこの文をうまく訳すことができません。そこで英英辞書を見てみると、having a fixed conventional style（Collins Dictionary）と定義されていました。ここから、iconicを「サクラをあらわす，サクラらしい」と訳せるのではないかと思いました。
余談ですが、この記事によると、1912年に当時の東京市が桜の木を3000本ワシントンに贈ったそうです。先月ワシントンのポトマックリバーで桜を見ましたが、日本からの贈り物とは露知らず、とても驚きました。（Jakie）

鳥の研究による記事から英語表現を拾います。

今回扱うのはbe on the alert for Aという表現です。alertには「《…に》油断のない」「〈人に〉警報を出す」などの意味があり、be on the alert for Aという形で「〈人が〉Aに対して十分警戒している」という状態を表すことができます。簡単な表現なのでしっかりおさえておきたいと思います。（Jakie）

バリ島の空港で、飛行機が滑走路を通り越し海に落ちてしまいました。

Some 101 passengers and seven crew members were aboard the plane when it overshot the runway and fell into the sea from a height of about 55 yards in Bali on Saturday. The cause of the accident remains unclear.

今回取り上げる表現は、overshootです。過去にも先輩が取り上げておられますが、cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20121210/1355122007 http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20120112/1326378438　辞書で意味を調べてみると「〈場所〉をうっかり通り越す」(『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館)と定義されていました。また、LDOCEでは"to accidentally go a little further than you intended"と定義されていました。
飛行機が滑走路を通り越してしまうこと、というのは「オーバーラン」と表現するのが一般的だと私は勝手に思っていたので、念の為にoverrunも調べてみると"to run or go beyond or past "(Merriam Webster Dictionary)と定義されていました。辞書の定義を参考にすると、overshootには「うっかり、誤って、通り越す」というニュアンスがあり、一方overrunは「通り越す」という事をただ述べるだけ、というようなニュアンスがあるのでしょうか。

１００人以上は飛行機に乗っていたそうですが、一人も亡くなった方がいなかったという事は不幸中の幸いですね。(Astroriver)

On Saturday, Kerry and Chinese leaders said their two nations would work together to press North Korea to tone down its provocations. He met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi.

Kerry told reporters in Beijing that the United States and China are calling on North Korea to refrain from any provocative steps -- including any missile launches.

Yang said China's position is "consistent and clear-cut."

clear-cutは「＜発言、考えなどが＞はっきりした、明白な」という意味になります。(『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館)　英英にも"sharply defined; easy to perceive or understand"と載っていました。(ODO)
clear-cutには"(of an area) from which every tree has been cut down and removed"(ibid)という意味があり、「すべての木が伐採された（場所）」→「見通しが良い」→「あきらかである」といったように転じたと思われます。(Hatahata)

大変ご無沙汰しています。１０年以上も前に岡山のS大学でお世話になりましたYukieです。覚えてくださっていると嬉しいのですが・・・。このメールが先生に届くことを祈りつつメールを打っています。

私事ですが、この度、１２年ぶりに学校で勤務するご縁があり、週４日ですが、特別支援学級の子どもたちと英語を勉強することになりました。

そんなこんなで、英語教材やらをネット検索しておりましたら、先生のご活躍を拝見することができました。大変嬉しく思い、１２年前のアドレスをなんとか見つけ、メールさせていただきました。

基礎英語の講師を担当されていらっしゃたのですね。１２年前と変わらない先生のお顔を拝見し、もう嬉しくて嬉しくて。。。
本当にお元気そうでなによりです。そして、先生のご活躍を心からご祝福申し上げます。

私は、ペルーから帰国し早７年。スペイン語はすっかり忘れてしまいましたが、久しぶりに学校で英語を話すと、スペイン語がついつい出てきてしまい、どうしたものかと、頭を抱えています。

shock

今回は映画「ジョン・カーター」から日常で使えそうな表現があったので取り上げます

John Carter: Mars? I'm on Mars!
John Carter: Good God, I'm on Mars!
Dejah: So your home is Jasom(earth)? And you came on one of your sailing ship across this millions of karad of empty space?
John Carter: No, not like that.
Dejah: Go on, shock me. How???
John Carter:That brought me here.
Dejah: Oh well, that explains everything then.

注目するのは、shock meです。文脈的には「（何を聞いても驚かないから）言ってください。」と解釈しました。このフレーズには関係ありませんが、ほかにもshockには名詞で「頭髪のもじゃもじゃ」といういみがあるそうです（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第四版、大修館）。感電すると髪の毛が逆立つことと関係しているのでしょうか。（Sugar）

引き続き映画「ジョンカーター」から取り上げます。
デジャーが皇帝に"Don't shoot! He（John) is in my life”というセリフがありました。字幕には「命の恩人」と書いてありました。お恥ずかしいながら、命の恩人はlife-saverしか知らなかったので、勉強になりました。
ほかにもlifeを使った表現でsomeone has no lifeで 「人間関係が希薄である；つまらない人間である」というのもありました（Weblio参照　http://ejje.weblio.jp/content/someone+has+no+life）。(Sugar)

terrible trouble two

母と米国の友達が使っていたので取りあげます。
"How old is your son?"
"Terrible trouble two"
"ohh.."
「一歳まではangleだったのに、今は〜」という意味を込めているそうです。terrible troubleは略すそうです。
手持ちの辞書にはtroubleはついていなかったですが"terrible two"で「魔の二歳児、手のかかる二歳」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第四版、大修館）。日本語でいう「憎まれ二歳」というところでしょうか。どの国でも親が感じるのは同じことなんだと感じました。（Sugar）

meniscus

なんともせつないニュースです。mniscusは，「凹[凸]面」「凹凸レンズ」という意味のほか，「新月形のもの」，そして解剖学の「(ひざ関節の)半月板」という意味もあります。最後は凹凸レンズの形からイメージできますね。本人が一番くやしいことでしょう。ともかくも時間をかけて直してほしいものです。（UG）

MILAN (AP) — Inter Milan defender Yuto Nagatomo is out for the rest of the season and midfielder Walter Gargano is also set for an injury layoff.

The pair were injured in Sunday's 2-0 loss to Cagliari in Trieste. Nagatomo tore a meniscus in his left knee and Gargano has a left thigh strain. Inter did not say how long the players are expected to be sidelined but Nagatomo is unlikely to be fit before the end of the season. Gargano could be back for the final few games.

UG先生、ゼミの皆さん、本日はゼミへ参加させていただき、ありがとうございました。
担任をしていたクラスの生徒たちの頑張る姿を見て、「自分も」という思いになり今に至りますが、今度はゼミの皆さんから刺激を受けております。

昨年度の英検受検者約230万人のうち、およそ10%にあたる20万人が小学生であったようです。

Testing children’s English ability

Japan’s obsession with testing is growing, according to new information from the Eiken Foundation of Japan. The foundation, which oversees one of Japan’s most oft-taken English exams, the Eiken, has reported that the number of primary school students taking the Eiken test in practical English proficiency has reached the highest number ever.

More than 200,000 primary school students sat for the exam in fiscal 2012, up 80 percent from 10 years ago.
