logjam
DY(10/08/10付け)のスポーツ欄から英語表現を拾います。記事はキャノンオープンに出場している石川遼選手の初日の成績を伝えるものです。
Ishikawa, who had four birdies and one bogey, was in a logjam of six golfers, including Shinichi Yokota and Shingo Katayama.
今回取り上げる表現はlogjamです。logは丸太，jamはtraffic jamという表現がある通り停滞や渋滞という意味ですが，この２つの単語が合わさるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。辞書で調べてみると「１（川をふさぐ）丸太群２［比ゆ的に］（一般的に）物事の行き詰まり」と出ていました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。英英辞書でも確認してみると“a lot of problems that are preventing something from being done”と載っていました（LONGMAN Advanced American Dictionary）。
スコアがなかなか伸びず6人ならんで5位タイ。石川選手の戦況を如実に表現しているlogjamではないでしょうか。（camel）
かながわティーチャーズカレッジ第2弾（camel編）
自分もgacha君と一緒に神奈川ティーチャーズカレッジに参加してきました。簡単に当日の感想を述べさせていただきます。
gacha君ももうすでに書いてくれていますが，今回の講義テーマは「授業で感じる『教師という仕事』の魅力」でした。現職の保健体育と国語の先生による講義とグループに分かれての協議がありました。校種や教科は違いますが，やはり「教師」という括りで重なる部分も沢山あり勉強になった一日でした。
自分は特に保健体育の先生の言葉に何度か頷かされる場面がありましたので，少し紹介したいと思います。講師の先生は講演のキーワードに「ほめる」をあげ，そこを軸に話を進められていました。体育の授業では誉めることが極めて重要であるようです。しかし，ただ誉めるだけではなくて，教師も一緒に喜んでやらなければならないと体育の先生は強調されていました。喜びを共有して生徒に「感動体験」や「成功体験」を味わわせることが「自分にもできるぞ！」という生徒の自己肯定感につながるそうです。特に教師はその分野のプロなので，どうしても生徒がなんとか達成したことであってもそんなのできて「当たり前」という認識をしてしまいがちだと指摘されていました。
話の途中で体育の先生は「最も良い先生は子どもと一緒に笑う。最も悪い教師は子どもを見て笑う。」とおっしゃっていました。気になったので家に帰ってこの言葉を調べてみるとこれはイギリスの教育者であるA .S .ニール（Alexander Sutherland Neill）という人物による有名な格言であることがわかりました。ニールの言う「良い教師」になれるよう精進していきたいと講演を通じて思いました。（ゼミ生 camel）

昨日の読売新聞（10/10/10付け）にあった記事です。実現されるのであれば是非参加したいプログラムです。ただやはり論点は「予算」のようですね。（ゼミ生 camel）
The world is one’s oyster
今回はDorothy KoomsonのThe Ice Cream Girlsのp.173から英語の落ち穂拾いをしていきます。
He kept spinning me round and round until we were both dizzy with happiness. ‘You can do anything you want now, you know that, don’t you? The world is your oyster.’
今回注目したいのは，The world is your oyster.という部分です。Oysterと聞くと何を思い浮かべますか。ほとんどの人が頭に牡蠣を思い浮かべるのではないでしょうか。しかし，ここではそれは正しくないようです。そこで辞書をみると，oyster「お手のもの，思うままにできるもの」，The world is O’s oyster.「この世は（人の）思うがままだ，世界はもう（人の）ものだ」（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第二版）とありました。この表現は，吹奏楽でよく演奏されるメリー・ウィドウの?でThe world is my oyster.のように使われている表現の
ようです。

先日，田邉先生に勧めていただいたSimon＆Garfunkelを聴いています。その中で，今回はCeciliaという歌を紹介します。以下は歌詞の一部です。

ここで注目するのがCeciliaとJubilationです。goo辞書によると，「Saint, 聖カエキリア（？-230？）：ローマの殉教者；音楽の守護聖人」とあり，キリスト教関連の単語であることがわかります。そして，Jubilationはjubilateの名詞形で「歓喜，喜び」という意味です。さらに，Jubilateでキリスト教の「詩篇第100番；その曲」という意味があり，Ceciliaと呼応させています（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。
歌詞を音楽に乗せるだけでなく，このような仕掛けがされているなんて…まだまだSimon＆Garfunkelの曲を聴かなければ！！（ゼミ生persimmon柿生）

The Japanese and U.S. governments are considering the establishment of a program that would send young Japanese teachers of English to the United States to improve their English ability, it has been learned.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan plans to expand cultural, intellectual and human exchanges between the two countries, in addition to security and economic cooperation as part of the government's efforts to deepen the Japan-U.S. alliance. The government intends to reach an official agreement that includes the English-teacher plan when U.S. President Barack Obama visits Japan in the middle of next month.
The government envisions training young English-language teachers at primary, middle and high schools in the United State for periods of one to two years.
If 1,000 teachers were dispatched to the United States for one year at an estimated cost of 10 million yen per person, the government would require about 10 billion yen annually to fund the program.
To aid English education in this country, the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program has brought foreign young people to Japan to teach English at Japanese schools. The JET program is administered by the Foreign Ministry, the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry and local governments.
However, the government's most recent round of budget screening, ahead of the compilation of the fiscal 2011 budget, decided the JET program needs to be reviewed. In its subsequent budget request for fiscal 2011, the Foreign Ministry sought only 130 million yen, down 14 percent from the initial fiscal 2010 budget.
To set up the new language program, the government needs to secure the financial resources, observers have said.

bells and whistles with their thrones
今日のDY（10/11/10），Los Angels Timesの欄にあった記事から英語表現を拾います。今年中にはGDP（国内総生産）で日本を抜き，世界2位とあることが予想される中国では，人々の生活水準の向上に伴って，ハイテクトイレの売れ行きが好調のようです。
The technology is nothing new in Japan, where units with built-in bidets, known as washlets, are commonplace even in public restrooms. But in China, the nouveaux riches have only recently begun to accept bells and whistles with their thrones.

今回は太字部分を採り上げます。
まずbells and whistlesですが，『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』（小学館）によれば，bells and whistlesで「｟略式｠（製品の）付属品, アクセサリー, オプション機能, おまけ(extras)；〘コンピュータ〙（あってもなくてもよい）飾り物や付加機能」という意味があり，ここではbuilt-in bidetsをはじめとした付加機能を指しています。
また，文脈から類推できますが，throneには「王座」という意味の他に，「便座」という意味があります（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。つまりbells and whistles with their thronesで，文中のhigh-tech toiletsを指していることがわかります。（院生 小山本）
