dun 復習
お恥ずかしながら一週間ほど胃炎と思しき腹痛に見舞われ、何もかもが手付かずになっておりました。原因は自己管理不足以外に何もありません。申し訳ありません。現在は元の状態に戻りました。
簡潔に最近の出来事をここに記します。アメリカでは先週末から今週にかけて４連休でした。というのも、月曜日がM.L.KことDr. Martin Luther King Jr. の誕生日ということでHolidayであり、それに加えて、火曜日は大雪に見舞われるとの予報によりSnow dayで学校が休校になりました。全授業の復習をこのタイミングで行うなどこの４連休をものにしたかったという点で後悔は残りますが、M.L.Kのスピーチのscriptに目を通し音声を聞くなどと、Holidayにちなんだ学習の時間が少し取れたことは良かったと思います。
現在Shakespeareの授業では、”As you like it”に取り組んでおり、その前は、”Shakespeare’s Sonnets”に取り組んでおりました。そんな”Shakespeare’s Sonnets”を読んでいた時に出会った単語を本日は紹介します。
本日取り上げるのはdunです。何番目のSonnetであったかは忘れてしまいましたが、注釈にもなかったこともあってメモ帳に書き留めたことは覚えています。
New Oxford American Dictionaryを引いてみますと、”a dull grayish-brawn color” や、”make persistent demands on (someone), especially for payment of a debt” などとありました。(Wren@Nebraska)

インフルエンザを予防するためには、予防接種以外にも、個人が気をつけることでできる対策がたくさんあります。
Proper precautionary steps needed to prevent flu from spreading widely
Influenza is going on a rampage again this season. Sufficient precautions are needed.
According to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, the number of flu patients treated at about 5,000 medical institutions came to 54 per institution during the week of Jan. 14-20.
The increase in the number has not ceased since it surpassed the alarm level of 30 patients the previous week. The number of flu patients is estimated at 2.13 million across the country, close to the level of the previous season, when flu was at its most rampant in the past decade. Schools have been closed and classes canceled one after another.
Flu symptoms include a fever of 38 degrees or higher, headache and muscle pain. Children can develop convulsions and impaired consciousness. If you feel a chill, you had better go and see a doctor as soon as possible. In many cases, if you take medicine and rest for a while, you will be able to recover in several days.

convulsion /kənvˈʌlʃən/ を取り上げます。発熱や頭痛、筋肉の痛みなどと並べられていることから、インフルエンザによって起こる症状の一つであると考えられます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1（普通は複数形で）けいれん、ひきつけ 2（複数形で）（略式）爆笑 3（普通は複数形で）（社会、政界などの）異変、動乱」とありました。ここでは1の痙攣、ひきつけが適します。
LDOCEには “a shaking movement of your body that you cannot control, which happens because you are ill” や “a great change that affects a country” などと定義されています。
同じく痙攣を意味する言葉にcrampがありますが、Merriam-Websterによると、 “a painful involuntary spasmodic contraction of a muscle” や “a temporary paralysis of muscles from overuse” などとあります。convulsionは病気などが原因で引き起こされるものを表すのに対し、こちらは使いすぎによる疲労などが原因で起きるものをさすことがわかりました。（aqua）

女性だけが化粧をする、そんな時代はもう終わりです。

今回はwoo /wúː/ を紹介します。復習程度ですが取り上げたいと思います。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「＜人＞に[…するよう]せがむ；＜有権者など＞に[…で]支持をせがむ[with]」とありました。Collins Dictionaryは “if you woo people, you try to encourage them to help you, support you, or vote for you, for example by promising them things which they would like” と定義しています。
第二義には「＜男が＞＜女＞に求婚する, …を口説く；説得する」という意味もあります。同辞書には “if a man woos a woman, he spends time her and tries to persuade her to marry him” とありました。
記事の内容に戻りますと、韓国は男性用の化粧品の売り出しに力を入れています。この文化がアメリカなどで受け入れられていくのは、まだ難しいようです。また、近年ではジェンダーに対する意識が大きく変化したことで、お化粧は女性だけがするもの、という意識が変わってきたことがわかります。(amphibian)

テニスの全豪オープン女子シングルス決勝が行われ、大坂なおみ選手はペトラ・クビトバに勝利し、初優勝を果たしました。また、今回の優勝で、大坂選手は世界ランキング1位になります。

drape を取り上げます。文脈から、a towel drape over her headは、タオルが頭に被さっている風景を描写しているのではないかと考えました。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「≪…に≫〈衣服・布など〉を掛ける、被せる、飾る(hang)≪over, around, across≫」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to put something so that it hangs or lies loosely”と定義されています。予想した通り、drape overはタオルが掛かっている風景を描写したものであったようです。
ちなみに、アメリカでは、厚手で長いカーテンをdraperiesと表現するそうです。(Blue Sky)
平和ボケ
CNNを読んでいたところ、このように訳すのかとびっくりした表現があったので、ご紹介します。

気になったのは見出しになっていた、peace at any priceです。訳は丸括弧にもある通り、平和ボケです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）にはat any priceで「どんな犠牲を払ってでも、ぜひとも」とありました。LDOCEでは“whatever the cost and difficulties may be”と定義されています。
平和ボケと聞くとなんだか馬鹿にされているような気がしてしまいましたが、この記事に書いてあるように、自分の生活に重きを置いて、周りをしっかりと見れていないのも事実です。自国のことくらいはしっかりと知っておくべきだなと考えさせられる記事でした。(rain)

成田空港では、航空機誘導業務者にも酒気検査が義務付けられました。
Narita airport introduces breathalyzer tests for aircraft guidance staff
The operator of Narita International Airport has introduced compulsory alcohol tests for aircraft guidance staff, following a spate of incidents in which pilots and a crew member were found to have been on duty under the influence of alcohol.
In the tests, introduced by Narita International Airport Corp. (NAA) on Dec. 27 last year, if even a small amount of alcohol is detected, the person will be asked whether they have been drinking. Depending on the circumstances, they could be forbidden from guiding aircraft on the tarmac.

breathalyzer を取り上げます。後ろにくるtestと合わせて考えると、呼気を調べる検査器のことをさしていると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で引くとBreathalyzerで「飲酒検知器（商標）」とありました。動詞の形のbreathalyze /bréθəlὰɪz/ は「（普通は受身で）（運転手）の飲酒を検知器で調べる」という意味で用いられます。
LDOCEには “a piece of equipment used by the police to see if a driver of a car has drunk too much alcohol” と定義されています。
ランプコントローラーへの検査は昨年12月27日から行われており、微量でもアルコール濃度が検出された際は、飲酒の有無などの確認を行い、場合によっては別の業務に就かせるといった措置を取るとのことです。（aqua）
