neck 'n' neckを取り上げたいと思います。記事になっている短編アニメのタイトルとしてこの表現が使われていますが、これはちゃんとした英語の表現だと先生に教えていただきました。
まず『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、neck and neckで「【人と】(競技などで)互角で、大接戦で ≪with≫」とありました。neck 'n' neckはandが省略された形です。また、LDOCEでは“if two competitors or groups are neck and neck in a competition or race, they are level with each other”と定義されています。話題になっているこの短編アニメはオズワルドと警察官がカーチェイスをするお話らしいので、その様を表している表現なのだと思います。
ちなみに、語源を調べたところ、英辞郎 on the WEBには「競馬でゴールに到達するとき、ぎりぎり首の差であるときの様子から。」とありました。語源を知っていると覚えやすい表現ではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
