Boys come to school wearing skirts following ban on shorts

Teenage boys at a school in Exeter came to school wearing skirts this week, in protest at a ban on wearing shorts.
Around 50 pupils at ISCA Academy are understood to be taking part in the protest today, after a small group of boys came to school in girls' uniform yesterday.
"My son wanted to wear shorts but was told he would be put in the isolation room for the rest of the week," the mother of one 14-year-old told Devon Live yesterday.
"The head teacher told them 'Well you can wear a skirt if you like' but I think she was being sarcastic.
"However children tend to take you literally and so five boys turned up in skirts today – and because she told them it was ok there was nothing she could do as long as they are school skirts."

　“sarcastic”を取りあげます。

　学校側はスカートなら履いてもいいですよ、と「皮肉な」発言をしてようです。「皮肉な」といえば“irony”や“tease”などもあるのでそれぞれ違いを見てみました。

　LDOCEで“sarcastic”は“saying things that are the opposite of what you mean, in order to make an unkind joke or to show that you are annoyed”、“irony”は“when you use words that are the opposite of what you really mean, often in order to be amusing”、“tease”は“to laugh at someone and make jokes in order to have fun by embarrassing them, either in a friendly way or in an unkind way”とそれぞれ定義されていました。

　軽度のからかいは“tease”、皮肉な発言は“irony”、それよりも悪意がある方が“sarcastic”となるようです。

　この学校では女子生徒はスカートかパンツかを選べますが、男子は夏でも長ズボンしか選択肢がなく、あまりの暑さに耐えきれず、このような運動が起こったようです。(flying bird)
