novice 復習

横浜郄島屋の社員がダンスユニットを結成しました。

All the members are novice dancers and practiced hard in July and August. On Sept. 2, the store posted a video on YouTube of them dancing on the men’s clothing floor and elsewhere. The video also includes dancing at Minato Mirai 21 and other famous sites in Yokohama.

今回はnovice /nάvɪs/ を紹介します。接頭辞がno-なので、打ち消しの意味を推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「[…の]初心者, かけ出し」とあり、beginnerと同じ意味であります。LDOCEは “ someone who has no experience in a skill, subject, or activity” と定義しています。

続いて語源を調べてみたところno-＋-viceではなく、ラテン語でnewly imported slaves, person recently entered into condition” を意味するnoviciusが由来になっているそうです。(Merriam-Webster)
