　abide by /əbάɪd bɑɪ/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「〈決定・規定など〉を（同意できなくても）忠実に守る、順守する」とありました。LDOCEではto accept and obey a decision, rule, agreement etc, even though you may not agree with itと定義されています。

　abideの意味は「〈人・事〉を我慢する」や「〔場所/人の所に〕とどまる、住む」です。インターネットで語源を調べてみたところ強意のaと「ある場所にとどまる」という意味のbideからできた単語であるとありました。また、英文契約書でよく用いられる単語であるともありました。(rain)
